All travelers crossing Slovenia's borders must present a valid travel document before departure.
Free Movement Rights
The following persons have the right to free movement under EU law:
- Citizens of the European Union
- Nationals of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland
- Their family members (regardless of nationality)
- Third-country nationals with equivalent free movement rights under EU agreements
Note: Some border crossing points are restricted to travelers with free movement rights.
Temporary Control Period
- Valid until: 21 December 2025
- Reason: Increased terrorist threat and organized crime prevention
- Applicable to: All internal borders (Croatia, Hungary) and borders with Austria and Italy

Border with Austria
Austria controls the shared border with Slovenia. All border crossings are open for crossing with a valid travel document.

Border with Italy
Italy has introduced border controls effective 21 October 2023 — 18 December 2025.
Entry and exit from Italy is permitted for:
- All EU citizens
- All third-country nationals
- All crossing points are available
- Sežana — Fernetti — main crossing on A1/A4 motorway

- Allow extra time for border crossing due to temporary controls
- Follow all police officer instructions
Vignette
An electronic vignette (e-vinjeta) is required for motorway travel:
- Weekly, monthly or annual options
- Purchase online at evinjeta.dars.si or at petrol stations
