For cars, buses, coaches and trucks

This page provides vignette information for all vehicle categories: passenger cars up to 3.5t, minibuses and buses, coaches, campers and trucks over 3.5t.

Which vehicles need a vignette

Cars up to 3.5t

Vignettes for passenger cars (up to 3.5t) are required in Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Switzerland, Romania and Bulgaria. The system is simple: buy an electronic vignette online and it links to your license plate.

Trucks >3.5t / Buses / Coaches

For trucks and buses (over 3.5t) separate systems apply: Eurovignette (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Sweden), eTOLL network in Poland, HU-GO in Hungary, myto.sk in Slovakia and RO-vinieta in Romania. Trucks usually pay per kilometer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an electronic vignette?
An electronic vignette is a digital permit to use toll motorways. It is linked to your vehicle's license plate.
How to buy a vignette?
Buy the vignette on the country's official website before your trip. Official site links are provided above.
What is the penalty for not having a vignette?
Fines range from €100 to €3000 depending on the country. We recommend always buying a vignette in advance.
Do I need a vignette for a car with a trailer?
In most countries, the trailer does not affect the category — vignette is only needed for the towing vehicle. However, in Austria and Switzerland, a separate vignette may be required for trailers over 3.5t total weight.
Do minibuses or campers need a vignette?
Yes, if the weight is up to 3.5t — the same rules apply as for passenger cars. Campers over 3.5t often fall under the truck category and require a separate toll system.
What is the difference between car and truck toll systems?
Cars buy a vignette for a fixed period (day, week, year). Trucks usually pay per kilometer using on-board units (OBU) or special systems like Eurovignette, HU-GO, eTOLL.
