Republic Day (Implantação da República) falls on Monday, 5 October 2026. On this date, a truck driving ban applies in Portugal. Portugal is the only country that enforces a holiday ban on this date. The ban applies only to goods vehicles (HGV/TIR) above the weight threshold. Passenger cars, coaches, buses and motorcycles are exempt.
The Portuguese restriction is short and targeted. It runs from 18:00 to 21:00 and mainly concerns dangerous goods. Non-dangerous goods are largely exempt. For this reason, ADR carriers and fleets with hazardous loads are the most affected group. The Portuguese ban is mainly focused on dangerous goods. Two thresholds apply. Vehicles carrying dangerous goods are covered from 3.5 tonnes. The general holiday threshold is 7.5 tonnes. Drivers of ADR vehicles should check their load documents before they enter the EN1, A1 or A2 on 5 October. The restriction can also differ by route, so the exact road section matters.
Weight thresholds in Europe
Weight thresholds are not the same in all countries. Most European countries apply their bans to trucks above 7.5 tonnes. This includes France, Germany, Austria and Italy. Poland uses a higher threshold of 12 tonnes, so lighter trucks are not banned there. Switzerland is the strictest country with a threshold of 3.5 tonnes. The Swiss rules also include a daily night ban from 22:00 to 05:00. Portugal uses 3.5 tonnes only for dangerous goods and 7.5 tonnes for the holiday ban.
Regular Sunday bans on 4 October
The Republic Day ban does not apply outside Portugal. However, drivers on long-haul routes will cross other countries on Sunday 4 October. In France, the regular ban runs from Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00 on all roads for trucks above 7.5 tonnes. In Germany, trucks above 7.5 tonnes may not use federal roads and motorways on Sundays from 00:00 to 22:00. In Italy, the Sunday ban for trucks above 7.5 tonnes runs from 09:00 to 22:00 in the winter period and from 07:00 to 22:00 in the summer period.
Plan Your Route
Adjust delivery times. The Portuguese window on 5 October is only three hours long. ADR drivers should complete deliveries on the affected roads before 18:00 or start the next section after 21:00. Drivers who must cross France or Germany on Sunday should move again only after the regular ban ends at 22:00 on 4 October. Where possible, depart before 00:00 on 5 October to gain a full working day before the evening window.
