This week, 🇭🇺 Hungary has the cheapest diesel in our ranking at €1.831/l, according to our fuel prices across Europe. The most useful tip is simple: fill up in a cheaper country right before you cross into a more expensive one. Fuel prices update weekly, so this ranking can change. For example, diesel costs about 723.6 HUF in Hungary, 8.76 PLN in Poland and 10.817 RON in Romania. In Ukraine, diesel is about 98.98 UAH (€2.237). Smart fuelling strategy
Fill up before an expensive border. Plan your stops around the price difference between neighbouring countries. For example, fill the tank in 🇵🇱 Poland (diesel €2.059) before you enter 🇩🇪 Germany, where diesel costs €2.406. The same idea works for other pairs. 🇸🇰 Slovakia (€1.939) is cheaper than 🇦🇹 Austria (€2.29), and 🇭🇺 Hungary is cheaper than Austria and Italy (€2.337).
Top off in Ukraine when it makes sense. Your route may not pass through one of the cheapest countries. In that case, fill the tank to the maximum before you leave Ukraine. Ukrainian diesel (€2.237) is cheaper than in Austria, France (€2.401) and Germany.
Avoid motorway stations. Stations directly on motorways often charge 15–20% more. A 5-minute detour into a nearby town usually gives a lower price.
Look for supermarket stations. In Western Europe, stations next to supermarkets are almost always the cheapest in the area.
Tolls and vignettes across Europe
Vignette countries — buy a digital pass before you cross
A vignette is a pre-paid digital pass for motorway use. Many countries now sell it only online. Cameras scan your license plate, so you do not need a sticker. Three countries have no 1-day pass this week: Moldova and Slovenia (7 days minimum) and Switzerland (annual only).
Pay-per-kilometre (toll booths)
In these countries, you take a ticket when you enter the motorway and pay at the exit booth:
- 🇷🇸 Serbia: ticket on entry, pay on exit by cash or card.
- 🇮🇹 Italy: ticket on entry, pay on exit. One of the most expensive networks in Europe.
- 🇫🇷 France: ticket and barrier system on most motorways (autoroutes). Expensive, so plan your budget.
- 🇭🇷 Croatia: ticket on entry, pay on exit. Tariffs are higher in the summer season.
- 🇵🇹 Portugal: a mix of classic toll booths and electronic-only motorways (Via Verde). Get a transponder for the electronic-only roads.
- 🇵🇱 Poland: state motorways are free for cars. The private A1, A2 and A4 concessions charge at booths or through the Autopay app.
Italy, France and Croatia are the most expensive toll networks on this list.
Toll-free for cars
Motorways in 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇧🇪 Belgium and 🇳🇱 Netherlands are free for passenger cars. Rare exceptions apply to some tunnels and bridges.
