The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has flagged five road border crossing points where traffic was building up as of 30 October 2024. On Ukraine's western frontier delays are rarely spread evenly: a handful of large crossings absorb most of the flow while smaller ones nearby stay almost empty.
Where queues usually form:
These five crossings handle the bulk of car traffic between Ukraine and the EU. Checking the load before you set off is normally worth more than a detour improvised at the barrier.
🇵🇱 Poland:
- Shehyni — Medyka: the busiest passenger crossing, peaking in the morning and late evening.
- Rava-Ruska — Hrebenne: the main alternative for cars heading towards Lublin and Warsaw.
🇸🇰 Slovakia:
- Uzhhorod — Vysne Nemecke: the only road crossing for cars on this section, so a single wave of traffic is enough to create a queue.
🇭🇺 Hungary:
- Chop (Tysa) — Zahony: heaviest at weekends; nearby Luzhanka and Vylok often clear faster.
🇷🇴 Romania:
- Porubne — Siret: the main gateway to Romania, concentrating traffic from Bukovyna.
What drivers should do:
- Before leaving, compare the load at your intended crossing with the neighbouring one.
- Have passports, vehicle documents and insurance ready in advance — it shortens time in the lane.
- Avoid Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, when the flow is densest.
- Carry fuel reserve, water and medication: queues can last hours with no facilities.
