Shehyni: Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Polish border — when and how long to wait

Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side of Shehyni happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.

During shift change, processing of of buses at Shehyni typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.

At the neighboring Poland checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Poland is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.

User Reviews — 2.0/5 (30 reviews)

User sentiment toward Shehyni is strongly negative, with the majority of travelers reporting extreme frustration over multi-hour and even multi-day waits. Bus passengers are hit hardest: reviewers repeatedly describe being held at the fuel station before even reaching the border, then queuing for many hours behind long lines of tourist buses (often 7 to 13 buses ahead). Reported total crossing times are severe — commonly 8 to 17 hours, with several accounts of 12, 14, and 15 hours, and one traveler noting Ukrainian control alone took 12 hours plus 5 more on the Polish side. Movement is described as painfully slow, roughly one bus per hour, worsened by limited passport booths (sometimes only one open due to reconstruction on the Polish side), a single working toilet, and no benches, which is especially hard on families with small children and the elderly.

Recurring themes are the overwhelming bus queue, the very slow pace on both the Ukrainian and Polish sides, and poor communication from drivers and officials. Practical tips from reviewers: avoid this crossing if you have a flight to catch, budget 10 or more hours during peak periods, and note that crossings go faster (2 to 4.5 hours) only when passengers have no document or luggage issues. A few positive reviews confirm smoother passage is possible off-peak.
