Shehyni: Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Polish border — when and how long to wait

Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side of Shehyni happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.

During shift change, processing of of buses at Shehyni typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.

At the neighboring Poland checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Poland is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.

Why our figure differs from the official one

The DPSU reports the number of vehicles it sees on its side, eCherha counts only registered trucks and buses, and a camera shows one stretch of road. We combine these sources with driver reports and convert them into a wait time using this crossing’s own history, so our figure is an estimate of crossing time, not a vehicle count.

How the model works

  1. Base wait = vehicles in the queue × the average processing time per vehicle at this crossing (learned from the last weeks of history).
  2. The base wait is then adjusted for the lane mode, the weather and the current processing speed, with a correction around border-guard shift changes.
  3. The next-hours and 7-day forecasts use the same model on the typical profile of this weekday.

The best time is the hour with the lowest forecast queue from now until the end of the day; hours with known counter glitches are excluded.
