Chop (Tysa): Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Hungarian border — when and how long to wait

Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side of Chop (Tysa) happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.

During shift change, processing of of cars at Chop (Tysa) typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.

At the neighboring Hungary checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Hungary is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.

User Reviews — 2.4/5 (7 reviews)

The user sentiment for the Chop (Tysa) border checkpoint is predominantly negative, with most reviewers expressing frustration over long wait times. The average wait time reported is around 4-6 hours, with some extreme cases of 10-15 hours. Reviewers advise arriving early and being prepared for slow processing times, as the Ukrainian side often mirrors the slow pace of the Hungarian side. For example, one reviewer reported waiting 1.5 hours just to cross the Ukrainian border, only to find that the Hungarian side was also moving very slowly. Tips from reviewers include being patient and bringing necessary supplies, as the wait can be quite lengthy. The Chop (Tysa) checkpoint seems to be particularly busy, with reviewers reporting long lines even when there are only 20-25 cars ahead. To minimize wait times, it may be helpful to avoid peak hours and travel during less busy times. Overall, the Chop (Tysa) border checkpoint is a challenging crossing, but with the right mindset and preparation, travelers can navigate it successfully. Reviewers also mention that only a few cars are let through at a time, which contributes to the long wait times. For instance, one reviewer reported that only 4-6 cars were being let through at a time, which led to a wait of over 6 hours.
