Chop (Tysa): Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Hungarian border — when and how long to wait
Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side of Chop (Tysa) happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.
During shift change, processing of of buses at Chop (Tysa) typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.
At the neighboring Hungary checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Hungary is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.

User Reviews — 3.5/5 (2 reviews)
Reported wait times are extreme and concentrated on bus traffic. On 5 September 2024 a traveler arrived at 12:00 and did not cross until 03:00 the following night — 15 hours total — with 12 buses queued ahead. On 10 August 2024 another arrived at 12:10 and was still waiting at 19:50, roughly 8 hours in, with only 3 buses ahead at the start. The pattern is clear: midday arrivals face the worst delays, and even a short bus queue translates into many hours of waiting.
A recurring complaint is that the bottleneck appears artificial. One reviewer noted the bridge was completely empty while buses were held back and not let through, indicating processing throughput rather than traffic volume drives the delay. Practical tips: avoid arriving around noon, expect 8-15 hours if crossing by bus, count the buses ahead as a rough gauge, and plan for an overnight crossing.

Reviews about the checkpoint Chop (Tysa), By bus
