Overview
The Day of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic (locally "Deň Ústavy Slovenskej republiky") falls on Tuesday, 1 September 2026. On this date a national truck driving ban (Slovak: "zákaz jazdy") applies in Slovakia from 00:00 to 22:00 on all roads. The restriction covers goods vehicles (HGV/TIR) only. Passenger cars, coaches and buses, and motorcycles are exempt, and several countries also exempt empty containers returning to base.
Slovakia sits on the main east-west freight axis between Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic. A 22-hour closure of all Slovak roads to heavy goods traffic therefore affects UA-EU freight, north-south corridors toward the Alpine region, and any tour that plans to cross Slovak territory on that Tuesday. Pre-holiday day (Monday 2026-08-31)
The eve of the holiday is a Monday, so the Saturday and Friday pre-holiday windows used by Poland, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary and Bulgaria do not apply. Slovakia's own "Saturday pre-holiday ban when followed by a holiday" rule is likewise not triggered, because 31 August 2026 is not a Saturday. Monday 31 August carries no restriction beyond the regular weekly pattern, so a full working day is available for positioning before midnight.

Slovakia
Weight: goods vehicles above 7.5 tonnes, and above 3.5 tonnes when a trailer is coupled. Roads: all roads — this is a nationwide ban, not a motorway-only measure, so there is no legal alternative route across Slovak territory during the window. Recurring pattern: Sundays and public holidays 00:00–22:00, plus a Saturday pre-holiday ban when the Saturday is followed by a holiday. Exemptions: between 00:00 and 06:00 transport of perishable goods, combined transport, live animals and fuel may move. Outside that early-morning slot the exemptions do not apply. Penalties: €150 to €1,500.
Note the weight logic carefully, because thresholds are not uniform across Europe. Slovakia uses 7.5 tonnes, or 3.5 tonnes with a trailer. Poland applies its holiday ban only above 12 tonnes, so lighter trucks are not banned there. Switzerland is the strictest, restricting everything above 3.5 tonnes on all public roads, with a daily night ban from 22:00 to 05:00. Most other countries, including Germany, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic, use the 7.5-tonne line. Verify your combination weight, not just the tractor unit.
Plan Your Route
Depart before 00:00 on 1 September 2026. The Slovak ban starts at midnight, not in the morning. A vehicle that clears the Slovak border before 00:00 on Monday night and continues into a neighbouring country avoids the window entirely. If that is not achievable, plan a legal stop and use TEN-T or secured rest areas with overnight parking availability for the night of 1 September; demand for spaces near the Slovak borders rises sharply on ban days.
Consider transit through countries without a holiday ban on this date. Only regular weekly patterns apply elsewhere, and 1 September 2026 is a Tuesday. Austria restricts vehicles above 7.5t on motorways and expressways on Sundays and holidays only. Germany applies the same 00:00–22:00 Sunday and public holiday pattern above 7.5t on federal roads and motorways. The Czech Republic restricts Sundays and holidays 13:00–22:00 on motorways, expressways and first-class roads, plus Fridays 17:00–21:00 in July and August. Hungary applies 06:00–22:00 on Sundays and holidays from April to September. Poland applies 08:00–22:00 above 12t on Sundays and holidays. None of these windows fall on a Tuesday, so a detour via Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic or Poland is generally viable on 1 September.
Rerouting is not free. A detour around Slovakia adds distance, toll and fuel cost. Model the difference before you commit — a longer legal route may still be cheaper than a €1,500 penalty and a lost delivery slot, but the total cost rises significantly on long detours. Allow border buffer time. Traffic bans concentrate departures immediately after 22:00, and border crossings on the Slovak perimeter can build significant queues in the hours that follow.
