2026 holiday calendar changes
Slovakia reduced its rest-day holidays as part of public finance consolidation. Since 2024, 1 September (Constitution Day) is a working day. From 2026, 17 November (Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day) is permanently a working day, and under § 4b of Act No. 241/1993 Z. z., 8 May (Victory over Fascism Day) and 15 September (Our Lady of Sorrows) are not rest days in 2026. 28 October is a state holiday without rest-day status. No truck driving ban applies on any of these dates in 2026.
How consecutive rest days work
When rest days follow each other, the ban applies on the first day from 07:00 to 19:00 and on the last day from 00:00 to 22:00, with no ban on the days in between. A single rest-day holiday that follows a working day is banned the whole 00:00–22:00 window. In 2026 this produces: Good Friday 3 April 00:00–22:00 (a single rest day, since the following Saturday is not a statutory rest day), Easter Sunday 5 April and Easter Monday 6 April both 00:00–22:00, 29 August 07:00–19:00 followed by Sunday 30 August 00:00–22:00, and the Christmas block 24 December 07:00–19:00, 25–26 December no ban, Sunday 27 December 00:00–22:00.
Class III roads 12 t restriction
Separately from the Sunday and holiday ban, § 39(4) of Act No. 8/2009 Z. z. bans trucks and combinations over 12 t GVW from class III roads year-round. Exceptions cover loading and unloading on the road, operators based on the road, journeys for repairs, servicing or inspections, and driving-school vehicles.
Individual and temporary exemptions
The Ministry of Transport can grant exemptions from the § 39 driving ban, with conditions and time and territorial limits set in the permit. Around major holidays Slovak authorities sometimes announce time-limited general exemptions; in 2026 such relaxations were announced for parts of Good Friday and 1 May. Check current announcements before dispatching on a ban day.
FAQ
Are trucks allowed to drive on Sundays in Slovakia?
Not during the ban window. Trucks over 7.5 t GVW and motor vehicles over 3.5 t GVW with a trailer may not use motorways, expressways and class I roads on Sundays from 00:00 to 22:00.
Which vehicles are affected by the Slovak driving ban?
Motor vehicles with a maximum permissible weight over 7.5 t, and motor vehicles over 3.5 t when towing a trailer. This means many truck-trailer combinations are covered even below the 7.5 t solo threshold.
Is there a summer truck ban in Slovakia in 2026?
Yes. From 1 July to 31 August 2026 trucks are banned on Saturdays that follow a working day from 07:00 to 19:00, in addition to the normal Sunday ban from 00:00 to 22:00.
Which 2026 public holidays have no truck ban in Slovakia?
8 May, 1 September, 15 September, 28 October and 17 November. Under Act No. 241/1993 Z. z. as amended, these are state holidays but not statutory rest days in 2026, so the § 39 driving ban does not apply on them.
Can trucks drive on Christmas Day 2026 in Slovakia?
Yes. In the 24–27 December 2026 rest-day block the ban applies on the first day (24 December, 07:00–19:00) and the last day (Sunday 27 December, 00:00–22:00). On 25 and 26 December, the middle days of the block, there is no ban.
Which roads are covered by the Slovak truck ban?
Motorways, expressways and class I roads. Class II and III roads are not covered by the Sunday and holiday ban, but class III roads have a separate year-round restriction for vehicles and combinations over 12 t GVW unless the journey serves local access, loading or unloading, servicing or similar listed purposes.
What is the fine for violating the Slovak truck driving ban?
Fines start at about €300. Police can also require proof that a journey qualifies for an exemption, and further penalties can follow if it does not.
