If you are planning to travel through the Netherlands this weekend, be aware that the national road authority Rijkswaterstaat is carrying out large-scale roadworks. Six major motorways will be closed or severely restricted from Friday morning, 11 September, until Monday morning, 14 September.
Main road closures:
The most critical sections are the A4, A9, A15, A59 and A73 motorways and the N3. Each will have its own diversion routes, but expect an extra 10–30 minutes on the road. The works aim to improve the road surface and maintain the infrastructure.
📍 Details for each section:
- A4 (Belgian border → Markiezaat junction): closed from 20:00 on 11 September until 05:00 on 14 September. Diversion: E19 (Belgium), A16, A58. This main artery to Antwerp and Brussels will carry heavy traffic.
- A9 (Holendrecht → Badhoevedorp junctions, both directions): closed from 20:00 on 11 September until 05:00 on 14 September. Diversion: A2, A10, A4. This route is critical for access to Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport.
- A15 (Benelux → Vaanplein junctions): closed from 21:00 on 11 September until 05:00 on 14 September. Diversion: A4, A20, A16. Important for southbound traffic.
- A59 (Waalwijk-Centrum → Hooipolder junction): closed from 21:00 on 11 September until 05:00 on 14 September. Also affects the adjacent A27 roads.
- A73 (Het Vonderen junction → Roermond-Oost): closed from 21:00 on 11 September until 05:00 on 14 September. Diversion: A2, A67, N280. Route towards the German border.
- N3 (Papendrecht hydraulic structure): long-term closure until 21 April 2027 to replace the hydraulic structure. Diversion via the A15 and A16.
Practical tips for travellers:
Check your route before setting off and allow an extra 10–30 minutes. Avoid these roads during weekend peak hours (Friday evening, Sunday). Truck drivers should check tonnage restrictions on alternative routes — some of them are not recommended for heavy goods vehicles.
Follow the instructions of road staff and drive safely. The works only last over the weekend, so on working days from Tuesday to Thursday the roads should operate as usual.
