Medyka: Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Polish border — when and how long to wait
Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side of Medyka happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.
During shift change, processing of of pedestrians at Medyka typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.
At the neighboring Poland checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Poland is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.

User Reviews — 5.0/5 (1 reviews)
The concrete timing data is the most useful part of this report. The traveller joined the queue on the Polish side at 13:45 and had cleared the Ukrainian side by 14:45 — a total end-to-end crossing time of roughly one hour covering both border controls. For a pedestrian crossing between Poland and Ukraine, an hour for the full double-checkpoint procedure is a good result, and it suggests that the walking lane at Medyka can move efficiently during early afternoon hours on weekdays outside major holiday peaks.
The practical takeaway for travellers is that the pedestrian route is worth considering at Medyka, particularly compared with vehicle lanes that often face far longer delays. Arriving in the early-to-mid afternoon window, around 13:00 to 14:00, appears to work well based on this account. Because only one review is available, treat the one-hour figure as a favourable case rather than a guaranteed norm; conditions can shift sharply with holidays, weekends and staffing levels. Checking live queue data before departure remains advisable.

Short queue at the UKR checkpoint, horrendous queue (5 hours) at the PL checkpoint. Only two people working in customs area. Also, this website is unreliable. It suggested there was no queue when we arrived.
