Lithuania: no nationwide truck driving ban. Local and route restrictions may still apply, see below.
Lithuania has no nationwide truck driving ban: heavy goods vehicles may run on Sundays and public holidays without a general calendar restriction. The only routine national restriction is seasonal. During the spring thaw the road authority posts temporary weight limits on gravel and weaker regional roads. Public holidays still bring heavier traffic and longer queues at the Belarus border even though driving itself stays legal.

Spring thaw weight restrictions
Spring thaw, usually March to May depending on weather
During the spring thaw the Lithuanian Road Administration (Lietuvos automobilių kelių direkcija) posts temporary weight limits on roads whose surface is weakened by melting frost, mainly gravel and weaker regional roads. Typical posted limits on affected sections run from 10 t to 20 t total mass. The set of restricted roads changes every year with winter conditions: some years several hundred to over two thousand kilometres are restricted, other years none. Affected sections are marked with road signs and listed on the official traffic portal eismoinfo.lt.
Basic driving rules for trucks
Speed limits for trucks over 3.5 t: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h outside built-up areas and 90 km/h on motorways and expressways. The blood alcohol limit for professional drivers and for drivers of vehicles over 3.5 t is 0.0. Dipped headlights or daytime running lights must be on day and night throughout the year. Winter tyres are mandatory from 10 November to 31 March. These rules come from the Road Traffic Rules (Kelių eismo taisyklės) approved by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.
FAQ
Are trucks banned on Sundays in Lithuania?
No. Lithuania has no nationwide Sunday driving ban for trucks. Heavy goods vehicles may drive on Sundays on all public roads, subject to normal traffic rules and any locally posted restrictions.
Do public holidays stop truck traffic in Lithuania?
No. There is no general public holiday driving ban. Trucks may run on all 2026 public holidays. Expect heavier road traffic and longer queues at border crossings on and around these dates.
Are there spring weight restrictions on Lithuanian roads?
Yes. During the spring thaw the Lithuanian Road Administration posts temporary weight limits, mainly on gravel and weaker regional roads, to protect the surface while it is soft. Limits on affected sections typically range from 10 t to 20 t. Check the current list on eismoinfo.lt before routing heavy loads on minor roads.
I transit Lithuania towards Poland or Latvia. Do their bans affect my plan?
Poland has a real weekend and holiday ban for trucks over 12 t, with restrictions on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays plus additional summer Friday limits, so plan the Polish leg around it. Latvia, like Lithuania, has no general Sunday or holiday truck ban but also applies seasonal spring weight limits on some roads.
Which basic road rules apply to trucks in Lithuania?
Trucks over 3.5 t are limited to 90 km/h on motorways and expressways, 80 km/h outside built-up areas and 50 km/h in built-up areas. Professional drivers of vehicles over 3.5 t must have a blood alcohol level of 0.0. Dipped headlights or daytime running lights are mandatory at all times. Winter tyres are required from 10 November to 31 March.
