ETIAS Guide for Visa-Exempt Travelers: European Travel Authorization Explained

If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country, you currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area. However, starting from late 2026, you will also need an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) authorization. This guide provides all the important information about ETIAS for short-stay travelers.

Who Needs ETIAS?

Citizens of visa-exempt countries. If your country is on the visa-exempt list, then once the ETIAS system becomes operational, you will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization for short-term visits to Europe.

When Will It Be Required?

ETIAS is expected to launch in late 2026. The exact date will be announced by the EU. It will begin after EES is fully operational.

How Much Does It Cost?

The standard fee is €7 (for ages 18-70). It is free for those under 18 and over 70.

How Long Is It Valid?

3 years or until your passport expires (whichever comes first). You can travel unlimited times during this period.

How to Apply?

Online only at the official travel-europe.europa.eu website. The application process takes approximately 10-20 minutes.

ETIAS Application Process

Step 1: Prepare Your Documents

Have your biometric passport (must be valid for at least 3 months after your departure from Europe), payment card, and email address ready.

Step 2: Fill Out the Online Application

Provide personal details, passport information, contact details, and information about the first country you plan to visit. Answer security and health-related questions.

Step 3: Make the Payment

Pay €7 via credit or debit card (free if you are under 18 or over 70).

Step 4: Wait for the Result

Most applications are processed within minutes. In some cases, additional verification may take up to 96 hours.

Residence Permit Holders and ETIAS

If you hold a residence permit or a long-stay visa from an EU country, ETIAS is not required for you. Holders of long-stay visas or residence permits are one of the exemptions.
