On Ukraine's state roads, seasonal restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles over 24 tons have been reintroduced due to heat. In the hottest hours, the asphalt pavement softens and can no longer withstand loads, so temporary bans are in place to preserve the road surface until the end of summer. For drivers heading to border crossing points, this means needing to pre-list their travel time in advance.
Who and Under What Conditions Are Affected by Restrictions
The ban applies to vehicles with an actual mass of over 24 tons and axle loading of over 7 tons – but only when the air temperature rises above +28 °C. On state roads and key logistics routes in Ukraine, relevant road signs and information boards are installed, so drivers should primarily rely on them.
Together with the National Police, Ukrtransbezpeka, local authorities, and owners of road service facilities, designated areas for temporary parking of trucks are determined during the restriction period. The current load on routes to the Hungarian border can be tracked on the statistics page of the ‘Uzhhorod (Uzhhorod)’ point.
Who Is Not Affected by Restrictions
- transport used to eliminate the consequences of emergency situations;
- transport of hazardous and perishable goods;
- transport of live animals and birds;
- military transport and cargo for defense needs.
Carriers are advised to factor in additional time for the route, plan their movement for cooler hours of the day, and strictly comply with road sign requirements.
