Shift change at the Ukrainian–Slovak border: when and how long to wait
Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.
During shift change, processing of all crossing types often slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.
At the neighboring Slovakia checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Slovakia is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.
Uzhhorod — Vyshne-Nemetske crossing
This is the main international road and bus crossing between Ukraine and Slovakia in the Transcarpathian region. It operates around the clock (24/7) and is the busiest border crossing in the area, handling roughly 3,500–5,500 vehicles a day on the M-08 route, about 7 km (8 minutes) from Uzhhorod and 17 km from Michalovce on the Slovak side.
Cars, buses, minibuses and trucks of all categories are processed here. Pedestrians are not currently admitted, with a walking lane planned for 2026. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is also expected to be activated in 2026.
