Bechet — Oryakhovo Border Crossing
Status: International ferry crossing over the Danube between Bechet in Romania and Oryakhovo in Bulgaria. Since 1 January 2025 both countries are full members of the Schengen area, so border formalities are minimal and only a small share of vehicles is checked.
Transport: Passenger cars, buses and trucks up to 7.5 tonnes, plus pedestrians, all carried together on the ferry (RO→BG). The route is a quieter alternative to the bridges at Calafat–Vidin (80 km west) and Giurgiu–Ruse (150 km east).
Basic Information
- Crossing point: Bechet (Romania) — Oryakhovo (Bulgaria), ferry over the Danube
- Operating hours: tied to the ferry schedule, usually 06:00–22:00, departures every 30–60 minutes
- Danube crossing time: about 15–20 minutes
- Permitted vehicles: cars, buses, trucks up to 7.5 t (limited ferry capacity); pedestrians allowed on board
- Daily traffic: roughly 300–600 vehicles, peaking in summer and around holidays
- Distance from Bucharest about 180 km; from Sofia about 200 km
Queues and Wait Times
Typical waiting for cars ranges from about 20 minutes to 1.5 hours, spent mostly queuing for boarding and on the river crossing itself rather than at passport control, which is now selective. Trucks may take 1–3 hours because of the ferry's limited capacity. The lightest queues are in the early morning (06:00–08:00) and the evening (19:00–22:00); the busiest periods are midday and the summer months. See the crossing statistics for the latest patterns.
Live monitoring: RO→BG, statistics.
Practical Notes
- Ferry fares are paid in cash (Romanian lei or Bulgarian leva); cards are generally not accepted on board.
- Sailings may be cancelled or delayed in strong wind, fog or extreme water levels, so confirm the schedule before travelling.
- Vehicles heavier than 7.5 tonnes should use the Calafat–Vidin or Giurgiu–Ruse bridges instead.
- Fuel up in advance in Bechet or Oryakhovo, as there are no filling stations right at the terminals.
