Uzhhorod: Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Slovak border — when and how long to wait
Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side of Uzhhorod happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.
During shift change, processing of of pedestrians at Uzhhorod typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.
At the neighboring Slovakia checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Slovakia is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.

User Reviews — 1.0/5 (1 reviews)
Reported wait times are substantial in both directions. Travelling from Ukraine into Slovakia, the reviewer waited approximately 3 hours on the pedestrian lane. On the return leg back into Ukraine, they had already been waiting over an hour at the time of writing, with barely any progress in the line. This suggests that delays at Uzhhorod are not limited to one direction or one time of day, and that pedestrians should budget for multi-hour crossings rather than a quick walk across.
The practical takeaway for travellers is to plan for at least 1 to 3 hours on foot at Uzhhorod, avoid tight onward connections in Slovakia or Ukraine, and carry water and supplies for a long stationary wait. The reviewer questions the value of maintaining a dedicated pedestrian crossing that, in their experience, does not function as intended, and describes the overall service and organization as very disappointing.

Reviews about the checkpoint Uzhhorod, On foot
The priority is given almost entirely to buses, while pedestrians are left waiting for hours with no clear system in place. Why even have a dedicated pedestrian crossing if it doesn't function properly? When traveling to Slovakia, we had to wait for 3 hours. Now, heading back to Ukraine, we’ve already been stuck waiting for over an hour with barely any movement. It makes no sense to establish a pedestrian lane if people are treated like an afterthought. Very disappointing service and organization.
