Vyshne-Nemetske: Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Slovak border — when and how long to wait

During shift change, processing of of cars at Vyshne-Nemetske typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.

At the neighboring Slovakia checkpoint the border-guard shift change happens at the same local times, but Slovakia is on Central European Time — one hour behind Kyiv — so there it falls around 07:00 and 19:00 Kyiv time. Because the two shifts overlap, the slowdown stretches into wider windows on both sides: roughly 07:00–08:30 in the morning and 19:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time). During these intervals, processing on both sides can noticeably slow down.

User Reviews — 1.5/5 (4 reviews)

User sentiment toward Vyshne-Nemetske is overwhelmingly negative, with three of four reviews rating the crossing 1 out of 5. The core complaint is extreme wait times paired with exhaustive, slow inspections. Travelers report standing 8.5 hours in a bus queue while only two buses were processed, and one passenger describes sitting 13 hours in a bus heading into Ukraine alongside women and children, calling it disrespectful and inhumane. Even the single moderate 3-star review confirms an 8-hour crossing after arriving around 9 a.m.

The dominant pattern is thorough baggage and vehicle searches. Multiple reviewers note that all belongings are unloaded from cars for inspection, taking roughly 20-40 minutes per passenger car. This meticulous customs process appears to be the main bottleneck, drastically reducing throughput for both cars and buses.

Practical tips from the reviews: expect very long waits and plan for 8+ hours, especially if traveling by bus or into Ukraine. Bring food, water, and comfort supplies for children, since bus passengers can be stuck for many hours. Anticipate that every item may be removed from your vehicle for a full search, so pack in a way that makes unloading and repacking easy. Arriving early in the morning does not guarantee a fast crossing. Overall, patience and preparation are essential at this checkpoint.
