Siret: Ukrainian border-guard shift change at the Ukrainian–Romanian border — when and how long to wait

Border guard shift change on the Ukrainian side of Siret happens twice a day — at 08:00 and 20:00 local time. These are regular shifts that ensure continuous border control.

During shift change, processing of of cars at Siret typically slows for 20–60 minutes. To minimize wait, plan to cross 30+ minutes before or 60+ minutes after the approximate shift change. Check the live queue above for current status.

The neighboring Romania checkpoint is in the same time zone as Ukraine (Kyiv time), so its shift change falls at roughly the same 08:00 and 20:00. Because both sides change at the same time, the slowdown is concentrated in narrow windows — about 08:00–08:30 in the morning and 20:00–20:30 in the evening (Kyiv time).

User Reviews — 3.0/5 (6 reviews)

Travelers crossing at Siret consistently report a stark contrast between the two sides of the border: the Ukrainian side clears quickly, typically in about 30 minutes, while the Romanian side is the main bottleneck, moving very slowly and sometimes barely at all. Several users describe waits on the Romanian side ranging from one hour up to two hours before the barrier plus another hour after it. One reviewer who crossed at 5:30 a.m. passed Ukraine in 30 minutes but spent roughly 1.5 hours on the Romanian side, still counting themselves lucky given the enormous queue that formed behind them. Another arriving around 7 a.m. found more than 20 cars already waiting to enter Romania. The clearest recurring tip is to travel very early—leaving Chernivtsi at 5 a.m. or reaching Siret by 5:30—since queues swell dramatically as the morning goes on. Reviewers note the Romanian officers process only one car at a time, unlike the Polish side, though document and guardianship checks for parents traveling with children were reportedly smooth and problem-free. Sentiment is mixed and slightly negative overall, driven almost entirely by frustration with Romanian-side delays rather than the Ukrainian checkpoint itself. One informational note mentions that only four crossing points on Romania's border have a veterinarian, relevant for those traveling with pets.
