The single most important route-planning constraint for heavy freight in Romania: on weekends DN1 between Bucharest and Brasov is closed to trucks around the clock. |
| Heatwave bans | Temporary, when the meteorological authority issues orange or red heat warning codes | Usually 10:00–21:00; some emergency notices use other windows such as 11:00–19:00 or 12:00–20:00 | Motorways and national roads in the counties named in each notice | Trucks over 7.5 t GVW. Weather-triggered and announced at short notice, so check for an active heat order shortly before travel. |

Why Romania is a route question, not a calendar question
Romania is not a simple Sunday-ban country. Its regime combines route-specific bans, holiday windows, summer tourist-corridor controls and weather-triggered heat orders. The practical question is never whether Romania has a truck ban in general, but which road is restricted, on which date and in which direction. Before dispatch, check four things: is the date a listed public holiday or its eve; is it a summer weekend on A2, DN7, DN39 or DN22C; does the route use DN1 between Bucharest and Brasov; and is a heat order active for the counties on the route.
DN1: the permanent bottleneck
The DN1 (E60) restriction between Otopeni, Ploiesti and Brasov applies every week of the year, not only on holidays. Trucks over 7.5 t are banned Monday to Thursday 06:00–22:00 and around the clock from Friday 00:00 to Sunday 24:00 in both directions. Freight between Bucharest and Transylvania plans around DN1 by default, using the parallel A3 motorway instead.
FAQ
Are trucks banned every Sunday in Romania?
No. Romania has no nationwide Sunday ban on all roads. It applies route-specific restrictions on public holidays, in summer on A2, DN7, DN39 and DN22C, and year-round on DN1, where trucks are banned around the clock from Friday to Sunday.
What weight of truck is affected in Romania?
All Romanian truck-driving restrictions use the same threshold: goods vehicles over 7.5 t gross vehicle weight.
When is the summer truck ban in Romania in 2026?
From 1 July to 31 August 2026, at weekends on A2 (direction-dependent), DN7, DN39 and DN22C, mostly in 06:00–22:00 windows.
Does Romania ban trucks on public holidays?
Yes. On the covered routes the public-holiday ban runs 06:00–22:00, and on the eve of a listed holiday a shorter ban applies 18:00–22:00.
Is there a year-round truck restriction in Romania?
Yes. DN1 (E60) between Otopeni, Ploiesti and Brasov is restricted for trucks over 7.5 t in both directions: Monday to Thursday 06:00–22:00 and around the clock from Friday to Sunday.
Does the direction of travel matter?
Yes, on the summer routes. The A2 is banned towards Constanta on Fridays and Saturdays and towards Bucharest on Sundays, and DN22C is banned only in the direction of Cernavoda, so a truck can be restricted one way while the opposite direction stays open.
Can Romania impose emergency heatwave truck bans?
Yes. During orange or red heat alerts, temporary daytime bans apply to trucks over 7.5 t on motorways and national roads in the affected counties, usually 10:00–21:00. They are announced at short notice, so check before departure.
