Truck Driving Bans in Norway 2026

Norway: no nationwide truck driving ban. Local and route restrictions may still apply, see below.

Norway has no nationwide Sunday or public holiday driving ban for trucks. Heavy goods vehicles may operate seven days a week across the whole country. The rules that matter in Norway are seasonal: winter tyres with the 3PMSF marking are mandatory for vehicles over 3.5 t (15 November–31 March, and 16 October–30 April in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark), snow chains must be carried, and during spring thaw some lower-standard county and municipal roads carry temporary reduced axle-load limits.

Spring thaw axle-load restrictions (telerestriksjoner)

Spring 2026, dates set locally

During spring thaw Statens vegvesen may lower the permitted axle load and gross weight (bruksklasse) on some lower-standard roads. These restrictions are rare on county roads and vary by municipality on municipal roads. Current limits are published in the official road lists (veglister) for each county.

Winter tyre and chain requirements

Vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3.5 t must fit winter tyres marked with the three peak mountain snowflake symbol (3PMSF) on the drive and front steering axles. Other axles may use M+S or 3PMSF tyres. The mandatory period is 15 November to 31 March, and 16 October to 30 April in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark. During these periods the tread depth must be at least 5 mm, and at least 1.6 mm outside them. Snow chains must be carried when driving on snowy or icy roads is expected, and during the 5 mm period they must be carried regardless of conditions. The minimum is three chains for a single vehicle over 3.5 t, seven for combinations with twin wheels, and five for combinations with single wheels or double chains.

Basic driving rules for trucks

Vehicles over 3.5 t may not exceed 80 km/h, including on motorways, and 50 km/h in urban areas. The maximum blood alcohol limit is 0.2 g/l. Professional drivers may not consume alcohol during working hours or in the 8 hours before work.
