Overview
Planning your fuel stops and road tolls carefully can bring significant savings on a drive from Ukraine into the European Union. This week, 🇭🇷 Croatia has the cheapest diesel among countries with current data, at €1.848/l. The single most useful tip is simple: fill up in a cheaper country right before you cross into a more expensive one. Fuel prices update every week, so the ranking below can change. Always check the live European fuel prices page before you leave.
Where fuel is cheapest right now
The table below lists the cheapest countries this week, ranked by diesel price. 🇭🇺 Hungary is not included because its prices have not refreshed since 17 September 2026. At that date, diesel cost about €1.831/l (723.6 HUF). Please check the live page for a current Hungarian price.

Smart fuelling strategy
Fill up before an expensive border. The highest diesel prices in this week's data are in 🇩🇪 Germany (€2.414/l), 🇧🇪 Belgium (€2.43/l), 🇩🇰 Denmark (€2.54/l), 🇨🇭 Switzerland (€2.6/l) and 🇳🇴 Norway (€2.71/l). None of these countries appear in the table above. For example, fill your tank in 🇵🇱 Poland (€2.141/l, about 9.11 PLN) or 🇨🇿 Czechia (€1.963/l) before you enter Germany. If you drive south towards Italy, the petrol price in Italy is €2.051/l this week; you can compare it on the Italian petrol price overview. Slovenia (€1.732/l petrol) or Austria (€1.825/l) are cheaper places to fill up before that border.
Think carefully about filling up in Ukraine. This week, diesel in 🇺🇦 Ukraine costs about €2.233/l (98.82 UAH). That is more than in Poland, Slovakia or 🇷🇴 Romania (€2.2/l). A full tank in Ukraine makes sense only if your route does not pass through a cheaper country and leads straight into expensive markets. Use the currency calculator to compare UAH, PLN and EUR prices at current exchange rates.
Avoid motorway stations. Stations directly on motorways usually charge 15–20% more. A 5-minute detour into a nearby town often gives a lower price. Use supermarket stations. In Western Europe, stations next to supermarkets are almost always the cheapest in the area.
LPG drivers have the lowest prices this week in Poland and 🇮🇹 Italy (both €0.766/l) and in Slovakia (€0.776/l).
Tolls and vignettes across Europe
Vignette countries — buy a digital pass before you cross
A vignette is a pre-paid digital pass for motorway use. You buy it online for your license plate before you cross the border. Cameras scan your license plate, so you do not need a sticker. See all prices on the European vignettes and tolls page. Most countries offer a 1-day transit pass. The countries marked below have no 1-day option.
| Country | Cheapest transit pass | Buy online |
|---|---|---|
| 🇷🇴 Romania | 3.5 EUR (1 day) | roviniete.ro |
| 🇲🇩 Moldova | 4 EUR (7 days) — no 1-day option | evinieta.gov.md |
| 🇧🇬 Bulgaria | 4.09 EUR (1 day) | bgtoll.bg |
| 🇸🇰 Slovakia | 8.1 EUR (1 day) | eznamka.sk |
| 🇨🇿 Czech Republic | 9.2 EUR (1 day) | edalnice.cz |
| 🇦🇹 Austria | 9.6 EUR (1 day) | shop.asfinag.at |
| 🇭🇺 Hungary | 14 EUR (1 day) | nemzetiutdij.hu |
| 🇸🇮 Slovenia | 16 EUR (7 days) — no 1-day option | evinjeta.dars.si |
| 🇨🇭 Switzerland | 42.5 CHF (annual only) — no 1-day option | e-vignette.ch |
Pay-per-kilometre (toll booths)
In these countries, you take a ticket when you enter the motorway and pay at a booth when you exit. You do not buy anything in advance.
- 🇷🇸 Serbia — ticket on entry, pay on exit (cash or card).
- 🇮🇹 Italy — ticket on entry, pay on exit. One of the most expensive networks in Europe.
- 🇫🇷 France — ticket or barrier system on most motorways (autoroutes). Expensive.
- 🇭🇷 Croatia — ticket on entry, pay on exit. Higher tariffs in the summer season.
- 🇵🇹 Portugal — a mix of classic toll booths and electronic-only (Via Verde) motorways. Get a transponder for electronic-only roads. You can also check current fuel prices in Portugal before you go.
- 🇵🇱 Poland — state motorways are free for cars. The private A1, A2 and A4 concessions charge at booths or via the Autopay app.
Italy, France and Croatia have the most expensive toll networks on this list. Include them in your budget.
Toll-free for cars
Motorways in 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇧🇪 Belgium and 🇳🇱 the Netherlands are free for passenger cars up to 3.5 t. Rare exceptions apply to some tunnels and bridges. Vehicles over 3.5 t pay a truck toll (LKW-Maut) in Germany. For this, use the truck toll calculation tool for Germany.
Plan your trip
Plan your refuelling stops around the cheapest country on your route. The route planner helps you see which countries you will cross. Buy every vignette online before you reach the border. This avoids border queues at vignette sales points and protects you from fines. Finally, estimate your total fuel and toll cost with the trip cost calculator. Remember that fuel prices change weekly, so check again shortly before departure.
