EES Registration Guide: How to Navigate the Entry/Exit System at the Border

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is Europe's new digital border control system, replacing manual passport stamps with biometric registration. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the entire EES registration process, so you know exactly what to expect when you arrive at a European border.

Before You Travel: Preparing for EES Registration

Unlike ETIAS, the EES does not require any pre-registration or online application before your trip. The entire process takes place at the border. However, proper preparation can make the experience smoother and faster.

Step-by-Step: The EES Registration Process at the Border

Step 1: Present Your Travel Document

Upon arrival at the border checkpoint, present your valid passport or travel document to the border guard. The officer will verify your identity and check that your document is valid and authentic.

Step 2: Facial Image Capture

A live photograph of your face will be taken using a camera at the border control point. This facial image serves as one of your biometric identifiers. Look directly at the camera and remove any sunglasses or head coverings that obscure your face (religious headwear is permitted).

Step 3: Fingerprint Collection

Four fingerprints will be scanned electronically. Place your fingers on the scanner as instructed by the border officer. This process is quick, hygienic, and non-invasive. Children under the age of 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection.

Step 4: Digital Record Creation

The system will create a digital record containing your name, passport details, biometric data, and the date and location of your entry. This digital record replaces the traditional passport stamp.

Step 5: Entry Confirmation

Once your data is recorded and verified, you will be granted entry. The system will automatically calculate your remaining allowed stay (up to 90 days within a 180-day period).

Returning Travelers: Faster Subsequent Visits

If you have previously been registered in the EES, subsequent border crossings will be significantly faster. The system will use your stored biometric data to quickly verify your identity, meaning you won't need to go through the full registration process again. Only your facial image or fingerprints will be checked against the existing record, and your new entry or exit will be logged.

Self-Service Kiosks and Automated Gates

Many major airports and border crossings will offer self-service kiosks where you can complete parts of the EES registration process yourself. These kiosks allow you to scan your passport, take your facial image, and provide fingerprints without direct interaction with a border officer. Automated e-gates may also be available for returning travelers with existing EES records, further speeding up the process.

Important: Providing biometric data is mandatory for EES registration. Refusing to provide your facial image or fingerprints will result in being denied entry into the country. The only exceptions are children under 12 (fingerprints only) and individuals who are physically unable to provide biometrics.
