Cheapest Fuel & Tolls Driving from Ukraine to Europe — Week 45

Overview

Planning fuel stops and road tolls can save real money on a drive from Ukraine into the EU. This week, 🇭🇺 Hungary has the lowest diesel price in our ranking at €1.871 per litre. The biggest tip is simple: fill up in a cheaper country right before you cross into a more expensive one. Fuel prices update weekly, so the ranking can change. Always check the live fuel prices page for current numbers.

Where fuel is cheapest right now

The table below shows the 12 cheapest countries this week (week 45, 4 November 2026). It is ranked by diesel price.

#CountryDiesel €/lPetrol 95 €/lLPG €/l

3🇪🇸 Spain1.8921.7131.115

Note: prices are approximate and converted to EUR for comparison. The live fuel prices page shows current native-currency numbers per country and city. The ranking uses diesel. Petrol drivers should read the petrol column, because the order differs. For example, Sweden has the lowest petrol 95 price in this table at €1.48, followed by Poland at €1.527.

For comparison, diesel in Ukraine is about €2.355 per litre (104.19 UAH). Use the currency calculator to check UAH, PLN and EUR rates before you leave.

Smart fuelling strategy

Fuel costs vary a lot between neighbouring countries. These habits give the most significant savings.

  • Fill up before an expensive border. Diesel in 🇵🇱 Poland is about €1.913. In 🇩🇪 Germany it is about €2.212. Fill the tank in Poland, then cross.
  • Top off in Ukraine if your route has no cheaper stop. If you do not transit a lower-priced country, fill the tank to maximum before leaving Ukraine. This reduces the number of stops you need abroad.
  • Avoid motorway stations. Stations directly on motorways usually charge 15–20% more. A 5-minute detour into a nearby town is worth it.
  • Choose supermarket stations in Western Europe. Stations attached to supermarkets are almost always the cheapest in their area.

Some country pages give more detail. See current prices for Croatia, Austria and Spain. If your route goes further south-west, check the petrol price in Portugal. This week 🇵🇹 Portugal shows diesel at €2.273, petrol 95 at €2.054 and LPG at €1.03 per litre.

Tolls and vignettes across Europe

European countries use three different road toll systems: a vignette, a ticket system, or free motorways. Do not confuse them. They work differently and you pay at different times.

Vignette countries — buy a digital pass before you cross

A vignette is a pre-paid digital pass. You buy it online before you enter the country. Cameras scan your license plate, so there is no sticker and no booth. Most vignette countries sell a 1-day transit pass. Buy it only on the official site.

🇷🇴 Romania22 RON (1-day)erovinieta.ro
🇨🇭 Switzerland42.5 CHF (annual). No 1-day option. Annual vignette only.e-vignette.ch

Three countries have no 1-day option this week: Moldova (7-day), Slovenia (7-day) and Switzerland (annual only). Plan for this if you only transit these countries. Toll data was last updated on 1 November 2026. Prices are shown in the currency given by the seller, and some are approximate for comparison.

Pay-per-kilometre (toll booths)

In a ticket system, you take a ticket at entry and pay at the exit booth. These countries work this way:

  • 🇷🇸 Serbia: ticket on entry, pay on exit (cash or card).
  • 🇮🇹 Italy: ticket on entry, pay on exit. It is one of the most expensive networks in Europe.
  • 🇫🇷 France: ticket and barrier system on most autoroutes. It is expensive, so budget accordingly.
  • 🇭🇷 Croatia: ticket on entry, pay on exit. Tariffs are higher in the summer season.
  • 🇵🇹 Portugal: a mix of classic toll booths and electronic-only motorways. Get a Via Verde transponder for electronic-only roads.
  • 🇵🇱 Poland: state motorways are free for cars. Private A1, A2 and A4 concessions charge at booths or through the Autopay app.

Italy, France and Croatia are the most expensive of these systems. Keep a payment card ready for every exit booth.

Toll-free for cars

Motorways are free for passenger cars in 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇧🇪 Belgium and 🇳🇱 the Netherlands. Rare tunnel or bridge exceptions may apply.

This guide covers passenger cars up to 3.5 t. Truck drivers have different rules. They can use a Europe truck toll calculator, such as the mautrechner europa lkw tool for German road toll (LKW-Maut). Professional drivers can also calculate driving and rest time before a long trip.

Plan your trip

A few simple steps keep total costs under control:

  • Plan refuels around the cheapest country on your route. Check the table above and the live prices before you set off.
  • Buy vignettes online in advance. A pass bought before the border crossing helps you avoid queues and wait time at sales points.
  • Estimate the total in advance. Use the route planner to map your drive. Then enter your distance into the trip cost calculator to combine fuel and toll expenses.

Prices change every week. Check the live pages again on the day you leave.
