Note the weight threshold carefully. Thresholds are not uniform across Europe. Hungary applies the common European level of over 7.5 tonnes, which is also used in Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Slovenia and Slovakia. Poland restricts only vehicles over 12 tonnes, so lighter trucks are not banned there. Switzerland is the strictest, with a threshold of over 3.5 tonnes plus a daily night ban. A 7-tonne rigid vehicle that may drive freely in Hungary would still be stopped in Switzerland.

Plan Your Route
Depart before 06:00 on 20 August 2026. The Hungarian window opens at 06:00, so a vehicle that clears the border and reaches its destination before that time avoids the restriction completely. For long transit legs, leaving before 00:00 gives a safer margin.
Book overnight parking in advance. Secured and TEN-T rest areas in Hungary fill quickly on the night before a national holiday, because trucks stop at the same hour across the whole network. Check neighbouring countries before rerouting. The Hungarian holiday ban does not apply outside Hungary, but regular weekly patterns still do. Since 20 August 2026 is a Thursday, the Sunday and holiday restrictions in Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia are not in force on that date. Allow buffer time at border crossings. Queues build up before and after a national ban window, because departures concentrate into the same hours.
