Cheapest Fuel & Tolls Driving from Ukraine to Europe — Week 44

Overview

Careful planning of fuel stops and tolls saves real money on a drive from Ukraine into the EU. This week Poland has the cheapest diesel in our ranking at about €1.864 per litre. Poland also has petrol-95 at €1.551 and LPG at €0.839. The single biggest tip is simple: fill up in a cheaper country right before you cross into a more expensive one. Current fuel prices update weekly, so the ranking can change. Always check the live page before you leave.

Where fuel is cheapest right now

This is the Week 44 ranking (28 October 2026) of the 12 cheapest countries, sorted by diesel price.

Smart fuelling strategy

The price gap between neighbouring countries is the main way to save. Poland has diesel at €1.864 per litre. Germany, which is not in the table above, has diesel at €2.259. A full tank bought in Poland instead of Germany makes a clear difference. Use the same logic on every route: fill up in the cheaper country, then cross.

Hungary (€1.869) and Czechia (€1.942) are also in the lower part of the ranking. Their country-level numbers are on the live fuel page. Bulgaria has its own Bulgaria fuel page, with diesel at €1.884. Croatia is close behind at €1.886, and you can check it on the Croatia fuel page.

Do not rely on Ukraine as your main fuel source. Ukrainian diesel is €2.339 per litre this week, which is higher than every country in the table. Only fill the tank to the maximum before leaving Ukraine if your route does not pass through a cheaper country. Otherwise, start with enough fuel to reach the first cheaper station across the border.

Three more habits help:

  • Avoid motorway stations. Stations directly on motorways charge 15–20% more. Take a 5-minute detour into a nearby town.
  • Choose supermarket stations in Western Europe. Stations attached to supermarkets are almost always the cheapest in the area.
  • Compare neighbouring countries. Luxembourg diesel is €2.08, lower than Germany at €2.259. If your route passes between them, check prices at a fuel station in Wasserbillig and other Luxembourg locations.

For a long route through southern Europe, look at Spain, where diesel is €1.897. See the Spain fuel page for details. Portugal is more expensive, with diesel at €2.257. Use the Portugal fuel page to find a gas station near your route before you need to refuel.

Tolls and vignettes across Europe

Road tolls work in three different ways. A vignette is a pre-paid digital pass. A ticket system means you pay at a booth. Some countries have no car tolls at all. Read the rules for each country on your route, and see the full European vignettes and tolls guide for official links.

Vignette countries — buy a digital pass before you cross

A vignette must be bought online before you enter the motorway. Cameras scan your license plate, so there is no booth. Most vignette countries offer a 1-day transit pass. Buy it on the official site before the border crossing. Three countries do not sell a 1-day pass this week: Moldova (7-day minimum), Slovenia (7-day minimum) and Switzerland (annual only).

Prices are approximate and can change. Romania is quoted in RON and Switzerland in CHF. Use the currency calculator to convert them into UAH or EUR. Austria's fuel is also worth a look: diesel is €2.13 on the Austria fuel page.

Pay-per-kilometre (toll booths)

In these countries you take a ticket or pay at a booth. Plan some extra cash or a working bank card.

  • 🇷🇸 Serbia: ticket on entry, pay on exit (cash or card).
  • 🇮🇹 Italy: take a ticket on entry, pay on exit. It is one of the most expensive networks in Europe.
  • 🇫🇷 France: ticket and barrier system on most autoroutes. It is expensive, so budget accordingly.
  • 🇭🇷 Croatia: ticket on entry, pay on exit. Tariffs are higher in the summer season.
  • 🇵🇹 Portugal: a mix of classic toll booths and electronic-only (Via Verde) motorways. Get a transponder for electronic-only roads.
  • 🇵🇱 Poland: state motorways are free for cars. Private A1, A2 and A4 concessions charge at booths or through the Autopay app.

Italy, France and Croatia are the most expensive booth systems in this group, so include them in your budget early.

Toll-free for cars

Motorways are free for passenger cars in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Rare tunnel or bridge exceptions may apply. Heavy vehicles are treated differently. Truck drivers can use a German truck toll calculator to estimate their costs.

Plan your trip

Start with the route. Use the route planner to see which countries you will cross and where you can refuel. Then follow three simple rules:

  • Plan your main refuelling stop in the cheapest country on your route, just before a more expensive one.
  • Buy vignettes online before the border crossing. This helps you avoid border queues and fines.
  • Add fuel and tolls together. The trip cost calculator gives a total estimate for your drive.

Remember that fuel prices update weekly. Check the live numbers again on the day you leave.
