Overview: airport departure delays in week 44
Between 21.10.2026 and 28.10.2026 we measured 4750 departures. Of these, 3571 (75%) left within 15 minutes of schedule, and 197 (4.1%) left more than 60 minutes late. The average departure delay was 10.1 min. The worst single departure was 5 h 42 min late, and Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) had the highest average delay at 17.3 min.
The scope is narrow. All figures come from our own polling of the departure boards of 11 airports, cover the last 7 days and describe departure delay only. They are not network-wide airline statistics or an industry ranking. For flight delays today, the current data sits in the flights section, which this weekly window does not replace.
Airport ranking: where departures ran latest
Warsaw Chopin stands apart at 17.3 min, which is 5.1 min above the next airport, Sofia Airport (SOF), and 16.5 min above Chişinău International Airport (KIV) at the bottom of the table.
| # | Airport | Average delay | On time | Over 60 min late | Worst delay | Departures measured |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) | 17.3 min | 60% | 4.4% | 3 h 23 min | 1450 |
| 2 | Sofia Airport (SOF) | 12.2 min | 77% | 5% | 5 h 05 min | 515 |
| 3 | Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport (RZE) | 9.5 min | 80% | 5.1% | 2 h 59 min | 79 |
| 4 | Katowice International Airport (KTW) | 9.1 min | 80% | 5.5% | 5 h 42 min | 307 |
| 5 | Kraków John Paul II International Airport (KRK) | 8.3 min | 79% | 3.7% | 2 h 24 min | 844 |

| 7 | Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) | 5.8 min | 85% | 4.4% | 4 h 21 min | 505 |
| 8 | Copernicus Wrocław Airport (WRO) | 4.5 min | 85% | 2.7% | 2 h 54 min | 368 |
| 9 | Burgas Airport (BOJ) | 4.2 min | — | — | — | 18 |
| 10 | Modlin Airport (WMI) | 2.9 min | 86% | 3% | 2 h 35 min | 235 |
| 11 | Chişinău International Airport (KIV) | 0.8 min | 88% | 2.9% | 1 h 53 min | 346 |
One clear outlier, a tight pack behind it
Only Warsaw Chopin fell to 60% on time. Every other airport with a published percentage reached 77% or more. Size does not sort the table cleanly: Kraków handled 844 departures at an 8.3 min average, while Rzeszów-Jasionka, with 79, averaged 9.5 min. The share of departures over 60 min late is highest at Varna (6%) and Katowice (5.5%), although Varna rests on a small sample of 83 departures. Warsaw has two airports in the table, and Warsaw Modlin Airport averaged 2.9 min against 17.3 min at Chopin, so the choice of airport carried a real punctuality gap. Passengers who first cross a land border can check border queues before fixing an arrival time at any of these airports.
The five worst departures of the week
| # | Flight | Airline | From | To | Date | Delay |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | LOT3880 | LOT Polish Airlines | Katowice International Airport (KTW) | Warsaw (WAW) | Mon 26.10 | 5 h 42 min |
| 2 | RYS4963 | Buzz | Sofia Airport (SOF) | Charleroi (CRL) | Wed 21.10 | 5 h 05 min |
| 3 | WZZ4309 | Wizz Air | Sofia Airport (SOF) | — | Fri 23.10 | 4 h 27 min |
| 4 | WZZ1755 | Wizz Air | Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) | Stavanger, Rogaland (SVG) | Wed 21.10 | 4 h 21 min |
| 5 | WZZ1085 | Wizz Air | Katowice International Airport (KTW) | Francisco Sa Carneiro Int. (OPO) | Fri 23.10 | 3 h 44 min |
Three of the five flights are Wizz Air, two departed from Sofia and two from Katowice. The dates are spread across Wed 21.10, Fri 23.10 and Mon 26.10. Our data holds no information on why any of these flights left late. These rows describe individual flights and say nothing about the airlines as a whole.
Airlines: who left on time and who did not
| Airline | On time | Average delay | Departures measured |
|---|---|---|---|
| KLM | 54% | 20.3 min | 80 |
| LOT Polish Airlines | 59% | 16.5 min | 1088 |
| Ryanair | 73% | 13.6 min | 489 |
| Lufthansa | 74% | 10.1 min | 148 |
| Wizz Air | 79% | 12.9 min | 759 |
| Turkish Airlines | 79% | 10.8 min | 73 |
| Pegasus Airlines | 80% | 2.4 min | 51 |
| Austrian Airlines | 83% | 5.9 min | 54 |
| Wizz Air Malta | 84% | 6.2 min | 152 |
| Buzz | 85% | 3.2 min | 829 |
| Bulgaria Air | 88% | 3.8 min | 78 |
| Enter Air | 98% | -3.8 min | 54 |
KLM (54%) and LOT Polish Airlines (59%) left on time least often. LOT also has the largest sample of any carrier, with 1088 departures, and 30 of them were over 60 min late. Wizz Air recorded the most departures over 60 min late, 58 out of 759. Buzz, with 829 departures, was on time 85% of the time. Enter Air had the best on-time share at 98% and a negative average of -3.8 min. These are figures for departures from the 11 monitored airports and not for any carrier's whole network. More carrier detail is on the airline punctuality page.
Transparency note: only carriers with at least 50 measured departures are listed, because a carrier seen a few times has no meaningful statistic. Our records hold how late a flight left, not why.
How the week trended
Wed 21.10 had the highest average delay among the full days, at 13.3 min, and Thu 22.10 had the lowest on-time share, at 68%. Sun 25.10 also ran at 69% on time. The second half of the window improved: Mon 26.10 averaged 7 min with 81% on time, and Tue 27.10 averaged 5.8 min with 83%. The first day (Tue 20.10, 1 departure) and the last (Wed 28.10, 138 departures) are partial, so their counts and averages carry no trend.

What to do with these numbers
- Check the live Warsaw Chopin Airport departures board, or the board of your own airport, before leaving for the airport. A departure delay does not automatically cause a missed connection, since the gap can shrink in the air, but a short transfer is the real risk.
- Leave extra time on a short connection when your flight leaves from an airport near the top of the table, such as Warsaw Chopin or the Sofia, Bulgaria airport (SOF).
- When two airports serve the same city, treat the punctuality gap as a tiebreaker. Warsaw is the clearest case this week.
- If the trip starts with a land border crossing, check the border queues first. Queue time is the part of the journey you can plan around.
