Cheapest Fuel & Tolls Driving from Ukraine to Europe — Week 43

Overview

Planning fuel stops and road tolls saves real money on a drive from Ukraine across Europe. This week, 🇭🇺 Hungary has the lowest diesel price in our ranking at €1.868 per litre. 🇵🇱 Poland and 🇧🇬 Bulgaria follow closely. The single biggest tip is to fill up in a cheaper country right before you cross into a more expensive one. Fuel prices update weekly, so the ranking can change. Always check the live page before you leave.

Where fuel is cheapest right now

The table below shows the 12 cheapest countries this week, ranked by diesel price. The data is from 21 October 2026 (week 43).

Note: prices are approximate and converted to EUR for comparison. The live fuel prices page shows current native-currency numbers per country and city. Because prices update weekly, the order can change from one week to the next.

A few details stand out this week. Poland has the lowest LPG (autogas) price in the top 12 at €0.823 per litre. Sweden has the lowest petrol 95 price in the table at €1.604 per litre, although its diesel is higher. Diesel prices in the first five countries are within about 2 cents of each other. For these countries, the stations on your route matter more than the country itself.

Some countries are not in the table because they rank lower. For comparison, diesel in Germany is €2.245 per litre and in France €2.337 per litre. Ukraine is at €2.308 per litre.

Smart fuelling strategy

These habits give the largest savings on a long drive.

  • Fill up before an expensive border. Buy fuel in the cheaper country right before you enter a pricier one. For example, fill the tank in Poland before you drive into Germany. This week the diesel difference is €1.871 against €2.245 per litre. On a full tank, this saving is significant. You can check each country in detail, such as fuel prices in Croatia or fuel prices in Spain.
  • Top off in Ukraine if needed. If your route does not pass through one of the cheapest countries, fill the tank to the maximum before you leave Ukraine.
  • Avoid stations directly on the motorway. They charge 15–20% more. Take a 5-minute detour into a nearby town instead.
  • Use supermarket stations in Western Europe. Stations attached to supermarkets are almost always the cheapest in the area.

Border regions can also offer good options. If you drive near the Slovenian–Hungarian border, you can compare the price of petrol in Lendava with stations on the Hungarian side. This week petrol 95 is €1.691 per litre in Slovenia and €1.661 per litre in Hungary. If you continue south through the Balkans, you can look up the petrol price in North Macedonia on its own page.

Tolls and vignettes across Europe

Road tolls work in three different ways in Europe. A vignette is a pre-paid digital pass. A ticket system means you pay at toll booths. Some countries have no car tolls at all. Do not confuse these systems.

Vignette countries — buy a digital pass before you cross

In vignette countries you must buy the pass online before you enter the motorway. Cameras scan your license plate, so there is no sticker to display. Enter your license plate number carefully when you buy. Most countries offer a 1-day pass, which is the cheapest option for a short transit. Three countries do not: Moldova, Slovenia and Switzerland. Check the table.

🇲🇩 Moldova4 EUR (7-day). No 1-day option: the shortest pass is 7 days.evinieta.gov.md
🇧🇬 Bulgaria4.09 EUR (1-day)bgtoll.bg

Pay-per-kilometre (toll booths)

In these countries you take a ticket at entry and pay at the exit booth, or pay at booths along the road.

  • 🇷🇸 Serbia: ticket on entry, pay on exit (cash or card).
  • 🇮🇹 Italy: take a ticket on entry, pay on exit. It is one of the most expensive networks in Europe.
  • 🇫🇷 France: ticket and barrier system on most autoroutes. It is expensive, so budget accordingly.
  • 🇭🇷 Croatia: ticket on entry, pay on exit. Tariffs are higher in the summer season.
  • 🇵🇹 Portugal: a mix of classic toll booths and electronic-only (Via Verde) motorways. Get a transponder for the electronic-only roads.
  • 🇵🇱 Poland: state motorways are free for cars. The private A1, A2 and A4 concessions charge at booths or through the Autopay app.

Italy, France and Croatia are the most expensive of these countries for tolls. If you drive through them, include the toll cost in your budget.

Toll-free for cars

Motorways are free for passenger cars in 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇧🇪 Belgium and 🇳🇱 the Netherlands. Rare tunnel or bridge exceptions are possible. Trucks follow different rules. In Germany, truck drivers can use a truck toll calculator for Germany to estimate the cost.

Plan your trip

Good planning keeps the total cost low. Use these tips before you leave.

  • Plan your refuels around the cheapest country on your route. Use the route planner to see your route and possible fuel stops.
  • Buy vignettes online before you reach the border crossing. This helps you avoid queues and extra waiting at the first stop.
  • Add fuel and toll costs together with the trip cost calculator. This gives you one estimate for the whole drive.
  • Check the fuel prices page again just before departure. The ranking updates weekly.
