Truck Driving Bans in Bosnia and Herzegovina 2026

Bosnia and Herzegovina: no nationwide truck driving ban. Local and route restrictions may still apply, see below.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has no nationwide Sunday or public holiday truck driving ban. International freight transport may run on weekends and holidays without a general calendar restriction. Truck traffic is instead shaped by entity-level and local road-section limits, weather and event closures, and mandatory winter equipment from 1 November to 1 April. Public holidays still bring heavier traffic and longer border queues even though driving itself stays legal.

Entity and local road restrictions

Roads in Bosnia and Herzegovina are managed at entity level. In the Federation of BiH the motorways are run by JP Autoceste FBiH and the magistral and regional network by JP Ceste FBiH; in Republika Srpska the network is run by JP Putevi Republike Srpske, with motorways under Autoputevi Republike Srpske. There is no shared national calendar of Sunday or holiday truck bans. Restrictions that do exist are tied to specific sections: weight limits on damaged roads and older bridges, length limits on narrow alignments, and temporary bans for trucks over 3.5 t when winter weather closes mountain passes. Occasional event closures also apply, for example around the annual Srebrenica genocide commemoration on 11 July, when heavy-vehicle movement and explosives transport are restricted on routes towards Potocari. Check current road status with BIHAMK for the Federation and Auto-Moto Savez Republike Srpske for Republika Srpska before travelling.

Border crossing considerations

Delays for trucks in Bosnia and Herzegovina come mainly from border crossings rather than driving bans. The country has a dense border with Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, and not every crossing takes freight. The Sepak crossing with Serbia is closed to all cargo vehicles, so trucks must use another crossing. Holiday periods and summer tourist traffic lengthen queues at the main crossings even though the road behind them stays open.

Winter equipment

Winter equipment is mandatory from 1 November to 1 April for all vehicles on public roads except categories L, T and C. A truck must carry winter tyres on all wheels, or winter tyres on the drive wheels plus snow chains ready to fit on at least two drive wheels, or summer tyres with at least 4 mm tread plus snow chains ready to fit. The fine is 40 KM for the driver and 500 KM for a legal entity or transport operator.

Basic driving rules for trucks

Motorway speed limits are 80 km/h for freight vehicles from 3.5 t to 7.5 t and for vehicles towing a trailer, and 70 km/h for freight vehicles over 7.5 t and commercial vehicles with a trailer; buses may run at 100 km/h. Zero alcohol tolerance applies to professional drivers of categories C, CE, D and DE while driving, against a general limit of 0.3 g/kg. Dangerous-goods transport follows the ADR agreement, to which Bosnia and Herzegovina is a contracting party, under the Ministry of Communications and Transport with entity inspection bodies.

FAQ

Are trucks banned on Sundays in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

No. Bosnia and Herzegovina has no nationwide Sunday truck driving ban. Freight vehicles may drive on Sundays year-round.

Do public holidays stop truck traffic in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

No. There is no general public-holiday truck ban. Holidays differ by entity and religious community, so dates that are non-working in the Federation may be ordinary working days in Republika Srpska and the reverse. Traffic and border queues still grow heavier on these days.

Are there local or entity-level truck restrictions in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Yes. Individual road sections carry weight or length limits set by the road authorities, mainly on damaged roads and older bridges, and some sections close to trucks in winter weather. These are section-specific measures, not a national calendar ban. Check BIHAMK or Auto-Moto Savez Republike Srpske road status before departure.

I transit Bosnia and Herzegovina towards Croatia or Montenegro. Do their bans affect my plan?

Yes. Croatia applies seasonal restrictions from 15 June to 15 September for freight vehicles over 7.5 t and combinations over 14 m, on Saturdays 04:00-14:00 and on Sundays and public holidays 12:00-23:00. Montenegro restricts trucks over 7.5 t on main tourist routes during the summer season. Serbia has no ban. Plan the transit segment against each neighbour's own regime.

Is winter equipment mandatory for trucks in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Yes. Winter equipment is mandatory from 1 November to 1 April for all vehicles except categories L, T and C. Trucks need winter tyres, or snow chains ready to fit on at least two drive wheels. The fine is 40 KM for the driver and 500 KM for the transport operator.

What speed limits apply to trucks on motorways in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Freight vehicles from 3.5 t to 7.5 t and vehicles towing a trailer are limited to 80 km/h. Freight vehicles over 7.5 t and commercial vehicles with a trailer are limited to 70 km/h. Buses may run at 100 km/h.

Can professional truck drivers have any alcohol in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

No. Zero tolerance applies to drivers of categories C, CE, D and DE while driving. The general blood alcohol limit for other drivers is 0.3 g/kg.

If there is no ban, why do trucks still lose time in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Border crossings are the main delay, and some crossings such as Sepak are closed to all cargo vehicles, which forces detours. Many magistral routes are single-carriageway mountain roads with road works and weight-limited bridges, and holiday traffic adds congestion.
