The National Trade Union of Romanian Customs Officers «Meridian», representing employees of the Romanian Customs Service, announced that it will begin a series of protest actions starting Thursday. The reason is dissatisfaction with the draft of the new law on remuneration. Due to the protest, waiting times at border crossing points, particularly at the border with Ukraine, may significantly increase.

What is the essence of the protest

Instead of a classic strike, customs officers will apply the most thorough execution of all customs control procedures — detailed inspection of documents and goods both at border crossing points and inside the country. Formally, employees will work according to the law, but due to the scrupulous adherence to procedures, the processing of operations will slow down, and queues will become longer.

Why customs officers are striking

The trade union explains its actions by dissatisfaction with the provisions of the new law on remuneration, working conditions, staff shortages, and the lack of proper dialogue with the authorities. «Meridian» also informed the Romanian Customs Service about the beginning of a labor dispute and does not rule out a warning strike.

What this means for drivers

The greatest impact is expected on the main automotive routes, primarily at the Porubne — Siret checkpoint, as well as at the Dyacove and Solotvyno crossings. Before heading out, we advise checking the current waiting time on the Romanian border page and, if necessary, choosing an alternative route.

The trade union urges travelers and carriers to be understanding of the purpose of the action — to draw attention to the unresolved problems of customs personnel. Carriers and truck drivers should allow additional time for border crossing; the situation can also be monitored in the for truck drivers section.
