Ban active NOW in Austria until 24:00 local time.
Austria bans trucks over 7.5 t GVW every night from 22:00 to 05:00, on Saturdays from 15:00 to 24:00, and on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00. The weekend and holiday ban also covers truck-trailer combinations where the tractor unit or the trailer exceeds 3.5 t. On top of the nationwide rules, summer Saturday corridor bans apply on the A12 Inntal, A13 Brenner, A14 Rheintal/Walgau and A4 East motorways, and Tyrol enforces a permanent sectoral ban on the A12. Legal basis: § 42 StVO.

Summer Saturday corridor bans
Selected Saturdays, July – August 2026 · 07:00–15:00 on A12/A13 (09:00–22:00 on some dates); 08:00–15:00 on A4 East
Extra Saturday bans apply on the main Alpine and eastern transit corridors during the summer travel season. The A12 Inntal and A13 Brenner bans target transit toward Italy or Germany depending on the date and direction. The A4 East ban covers the section between the Schwechat interchange and the Nickelsdorf border crossing toward Hungary; on 26 October (National Day) an additional A4 East ban applies on the same section from 08:00 to 15:00. Tyrol adds regional restrictions on local roads on busy summer weekends to stop trucks bypassing motorway congestion. Corridor bans are direction- and destination-specific, so the exact road, direction and destination country determine whether a given trip is affected.
Affected road sections (4)
- A12 Inntal motorway
- A13 Brenner motorway
- A14 Rheintal/Walgau motorway
- A4 East motorway (Schwechat–Nickelsdorf)
Affected roads
- A12 Inntal motorway (Tyrol)
- A13 Brenner motorway
- A14 Rheintal/Walgau motorway (Vorarlberg)
- A4 East motorway (Schwechat–Nickelsdorf)
Exempt from the ban
Fines for violations
- Violations are punished as administrative offences with substantial fines; roadside checks are frequent on Alpine transit corridors
- Foreign drivers can be required to pay an on-the-spot penalty deposit of up to €1,308
- Corridor and sectoral ban breaches can additionally lead to a stop order at roadside controls
Provincial bans and overtaking restrictions
The national bans under § 42 StVO are only part of the picture. Each of the nine federal provinces can issue its own lorry driving bans, and ASFINAG additionally operates lorry overtaking bans and lane-use restrictions on the motorway network. On the Brenner, Tyrol and eastern-border axes the corridor rules often matter more than the national weekend ban itself, so the exact road, direction of travel and destination country decide whether a trip is allowed.
How the bans chain together
The Sunday and holiday ban ends at 22:00 and the night ban starts at the same moment, so a truck stopped for a Sunday cannot move again until 05:00 on Monday. After the Saturday ban ends at 24:00 the night ban is already running, keeping the truck stopped until 05:00 on Sunday, when the Sunday ban has begun. In practice a non-exempt truck that enters Austria after 15:00 on Saturday stands still until 05:00 on Monday.
FAQ
Can trucks drive in Austria on Sundays?
No. Trucks over 7.5 t GVW and covered truck-trailer combinations are banned on Sundays from 00:00 to 22:00, and the nationwide night ban then continues from 22:00 to 05:00.
Is there a night driving ban for trucks in Austria?
Yes. Trucks over 7.5 t GVW may not drive anywhere in Austria between 22:00 and 05:00. Low-noise vehicles with a valid L-plate certification are exempt.
When does the Saturday truck ban start in Austria?
At 15:00. The nationwide Saturday ban runs from 15:00 to 24:00 every week.
Which vehicles are covered by the Austrian weekend ban?
Trucks and articulated vehicles over 7.5 t GVW, and truck-trailer combinations where either the tractor unit or the trailer exceeds 3.5 t.
Does Austria have extra summer truck bans?
Yes. On selected summer Saturdays additional corridor bans apply on the A12 Inntal, A13 Brenner, A14 Rheintal/Walgau and A4 East motorways, typically 07:00–15:00 or 08:00–15:00 depending on the route.
What is the Tyrol sectoral ban?
A permanent provincial ban on the A12 Inntal motorway that prohibits long-distance transit haulage of selected goods suitable for rail transport. It applies around the clock and is separate from the time-based national bans.
Can provinces add their own truck bans?
Yes. Each of the nine federal provinces can issue its own lorry driving bans, so a route that is legal under the national rules can still be restricted locally, most notably in Tyrol.
