Depends on your nationality:

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens (31 countries):

• NO visa required
• ID card or passport sufficient
• Unlimited stay
• Right to work and study
• NO EES registration required

Citizens of visa-free countries (60+ countries): Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and others.

Requirements:

• Biometric passport (valid 3+ months after entry)
• Maximum stay: 90 days within any 180 days
• EES registration (active since October 12, 2025!)
• ETIAS required from late 2026 (€7)

Citizens who NEED a visa: Russia, Belarus, Turkey, China, India, and most African/Asian countries.

Schengen visa cost: €80 adults, €40 children 6-12.

Average wait times:

• SI→HR (Obrežje): 60–150 min summer, 30–60 min winter
• SI→AT (Karawanks): 30–90 min
• SI→HU: 20–45 min
• SI→IT: no queues

EES: +10–20 min first entry.

EES (Entry/Exit System) — EU automated system for registering biometric data of foreigners.

Slovenia launched EES October 12, 2025 — SYSTEM IS ACTIVE!

WHO MUST register: ALL third-country nationals (not EU/EEA/Switzerland), including:

WHO does NOT register:

• EU citizens (27 countries)
• Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland

What is collected:

• Facial photograph
• All 10 fingerprints (for age 12+)
• Passport data, entry/exit dates

First entry: 10-20 minutes Subsequent entries: 2-5 minutes (faster!)

Important:

• Free of charge
• Data stored for 3 years
• Automatic tracking of stay days

Speed limits:

• Urban: 50 km/h
• Zone 30: 30 km/h
• Outside towns: 90 km/h
• Expressways (H): 110 km/h
• Motorways (A): 130 km/h

With trailer: 100 km/h. Headlights 24/7 mandatory.

Slovenia has borders with 4 countries:

1. Slovenia–Croatia (busiest, temporary control!)

12 small crossings (EU/EEA only): Podgorje, Babno Polje, Vinica, etc.

2. Slovenia–Austria (temporary control from both sides!)

3. Slovenia–Hungary (temporary control!)

4. Slovenia–Italy (no control, free Schengen movement)

• Many small crossings
• NO QUEUES (free movement)

Fines (50% discount if paid within 8 days):

Urban: 6–10 km/h €40, 11–20 €125, 21–30 €250, 31–50 €500, 51+ €600+suspension.

Motorway: 11–30 €40, 31–40 €80, 41–60 €125–250, 61+ €600+confiscation.

In practice Slovenia rarely asks for proof of funds, but having evidence (bank statement, cash, credit card) is recommended.

• Best: Tuesday–Wednesday (low traffic)
• Medium: Monday, Thursday
• Avoid: Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday (peak days)

Best time of day:

• Best: 6:00–8:00 AM (early morning)
• Acceptable: 2:00–5:00 PM (after lunch)
• Avoid: 9:00 AM–1:00 PM (peak), 5:00–8:00 PM (return traffic)

Seasonal patterns:

Summer (June–August):

• Worst period — queues are TWICE as long
• Obrežje–Bregana: up to 2.5–4 hours
• Use alternatives: Plovanija, Kaštel, Rupa

Winter (December–March):

• High traffic to Austrian ski resorts
• Karawanks Tunnel: 30–60 min queues
• Weekends especially busy

Off-season (April–May, September–November):

• Best period — minimal queues (15–45 min)

Allowed to export:

• Personal items
• Alcohol: up to 1L spirits
• Tobacco: up to 200 cigarettes
• Food: non-live, packaged
• Cash: up to €10,000 without declaration

Prohibited: Antiques without permit, cultural items.

Restrictions:

⚠️ Men 18–60 years: Special DPSU permit needed to leave Ukraine. Exceptions: foreigners, refugees, disabled, parents with 3+ children.

Slovenia is friendly to Ukrainians, quick check (5–15 min).

Karawanks Tunnel (Karavanški predor) — tunnel between Slovenia and Austria through the Alps.

Characteristics:

• Length: 7.9 km
• 4.4 km in Austria, 3.5 km in Slovenia
• Travel time: 7–10 minutes
