Cheapest Fuel & Tolls Driving from Ukraine to Europe — Week 26

Overview

Fuel and tolls are among the largest costs of any Ukraine-to-Europe road trip—and they vary wildly across borders. Right now, Poland offers the cheapest diesel on the continent at €1.424/litre, which means smart refuelling stops can save hundreds of euros. The single biggest money-saving tip: fill your tank to the maximum in a cheaper country just before crossing into a more expensive one. Note that fuel prices update weekly, so check the live page before you plan.

Where fuel is cheapest right now

This ranking shows the 12 cheapest countries to buy fuel, updated for Week 26. Diesel prices determine your ranking—the most critical fuel for long-distance drivers. All prices are approximate and converted to EUR for easy comparison; the live fuel prices page displays current native-currency rates for each country and major city.

11🇸🇮 Slovenia1.7111.6
12🇦🇹 Austria1.7231.649

Prices are approximate and EUR-converted for comparison; native-currency rates update weekly. A 50-litre tank in Poland costs roughly €71, while the same tank in Austria costs roughly €86—a difference of €15 per fill-up. On a long journey, that adds up fast.

Smart fuelling strategy

To maximize your fuel budget:

Border-hopping refuels: Never cross from a cheap country into an expensive one on an empty tank. If you're heading from Poland into Germany, top up in Poland (€1.424/l diesel) rather than in Germany (€1.764/l). A full tank before crossing saves €17 or more.

Avoid motorway stations: Petrol stations directly on motorways charge 15–20% more than nearby towns. Take a 5-minute detour off the motorway into the nearest town—prices drop noticeably, and you stay on schedule.

Supermarket stations in Western Europe: In Germany, France, Austria, and the Benelux, large supermarket chains (Carrefour, Tesco, E.Leclerc, Edeka) operate attached fuel stations with some of the lowest local prices. Plan a short shopping stop and refuel there.

Max out before leaving Ukraine: If your route does not transit through one of the cheapest countries (Poland, Czechia, Bulgaria), fill your tank to maximum capacity before departure. You'll carry more fuel at Ukrainian prices than European ones.

Tolls and vignettes across Europe

Tolls vary wildly by country. Some charge a digital pre-paid pass (vignette); others charge at the exit booth (pay-per-km); a few are free for passenger cars. Understanding the system saves time and money. See the vignettes and tolls page for official purchase links and current rates.

Vignette countries—buy a digital pass before you cross

A vignette is a pre-paid digital toll pass. You buy it online, register your licence plate, and drive through. Cameras scan your plate at borders; no queues needed. Most vignette countries offer a 1-day transit pass—perfect for crossing without paying for a full week. Exception: Slovenia and Switzerland have no 1-day option; the shortest pass is 7-day or annual.

🇷🇴 Romania3.5 EUR (1-day)roviniete.ro
🇲🇩 Moldova4 EUR (7-day)evinieta.gov.md
🇧🇬 Bulgaria4.09 EUR (1-day)bgtoll.bg

🇭🇺 Hungary14 EUR (1-day)nemzetiutdij.hu
🇸🇮 Slovenia16 EUR (7-day)evinjeta.dars.si
🇨🇭 Switzerland42.5 CHF (annual)e-vignette.ch

Pro tip: Buy vignettes online a day or two before crossing—it takes minutes, and you'll skip toll-booth queues entirely. Romania and Bulgaria offer the cheapest 1-day transit passes in Europe; if your route includes either, treat them as budget wins.

Pay-per-kilometre (toll booths)

Some countries use the traditional pay-as-you-go system: take a ticket at the motorway entrance, pay at the exit booth based on distance travelled. This means you don't pre-pay, but it can become expensive on long routes.

🇷🇸 Serbia: Ticket on entry, pay on exit (cash or card). Typical cost for crossing: moderate.

🇮🇹 Italy: Take a ticket on entry, pay on exit. One of the most expensive toll networks in Europe—budget carefully if transiting the north.

🇫🇷 France: Most autoroutes charge by ticket/barrier system. Expensive across the board—plan frequent stops to break up costs and reduce fatigue.

🇭🇷 Croatia: Ticket on entry, pay on exit. Tariffs increase in summer season, so expect higher charges June–August.

🇵🇹 Portugal: Mix of classic toll booths and electronic-only (Via Verde) motorways. For electronic-only roads, you'll need a transponder—arrange one before crossing.

🇵🇱 Poland: Most state motorways are free for passenger cars. Private concessions (A1, A2, A4) charge at booths or via the Autopay app—check your route.

Toll-free for passenger cars

🇩🇪 Germany, 🇧🇪 Belgium, 🇳🇱 Netherlands: Motorways are completely free for passenger cars (under 3.5 tonnes). No vignette, no toll booth—just drive. This makes these countries excellent for budget-conscious transits across Central Europe.

Plan your trip

A few practical steps can cut your fuel and toll costs by 20–30%:

1. Map refuel stops around cheap countries: Use the route planner to chart your course. Identify cheap-fuel countries on your route and plan major refills there. If you're heading to Western Europe via Poland and Czechia, aim to fill up in Czechia (€1.473/l diesel) just before entering Austria or Germany.

2. Pre-buy vignettes online: Log your licence plate on the official vignette sites and buy your passes 1–2 days before crossing. You'll skip border queues, reduce stress, and ensure you have no tolls to pay upon entry.

3. Use route-planning tools: The nakordoni navigator helps you plan your drive, estimate fuel and toll costs, and identify cheaper refuel stations along the way.
