What is happening at the border

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine warns that, with the start of the summer tourist season, passenger and vehicle flow on the western border is expected to rise by roughly 20% compared with the previous months. According to Viktor Sampir, deputy head of border-control organisation at the Western Regional Directorate, the main drivers are the start of the holiday season, school summer breaks and the growing number of tourist trips to Europe. The heaviest load is anticipated on the Ukraine – Poland direction, which remains the main exit corridor.

Forecast for the whole tourist season

We cross-checked this warning against our own queue-prediction model, built on the historical record of the corridor with Poland. The chart below shows how the load shifts across the season — as a percentage of the annual-average queue level (100% = an average year).

Ukraine – Poland border queue forecast for the 2026 tourist season, by month

The seasonal curve repeats every year: from a quiet May (about 45% of the annual norm) queues climb sharply in June (≈94%), stay high in July (≈109%) and peak in August (≈125%) — almost three times the May level. In September the load gradually eases (≈76%). Adding the 20% year-on-year flow increase the border service forecasts, this year’s August peaks may exceed last season’s.

Within the season the hardest days are weekends: Saturday and Sunday show the highest projected load of the week, with daily peaks in the evening hours, roughly 16:00–19:00. Weekdays and overnight hours remain the lightest.

How to cross faster in summer

A seasonal rise does not mean hours of waiting for everyone — much depends on the checkpoint and the departure time. The border service and our data suggest:

  • Check documents in advance — passport validity, and for children the full set of exit documents. This is the most common reason for being turned back in summer.
  • Travel off-peak — queues are smallest overnight and in the early morning; avoid Friday evenings and weekends where possible.
  • Choose a less busy crossing — alongside the popular Krakovets there are other checkpoints where waits are often shorter. The best-crossing finder compares live queues.
  • Check exit restrictions — men of conscription age can verify any temporary restrictions in advance via the border service’s "Personal Cabinet".

Useful tools

A detailed 7-day forecast is available on every checkpoint page — press the "See the 7-day forecast" button under the queue chart. Real queues may differ, so always check live data before departure.
