🇺🇸🇨🇦🇬🇧 Visa-free Entry

US, Canadian and UK citizens can visit Spain without a visa for up to 90 days.

Documents:

• Valid passport (6+ months)
• Return ticket proof
• Hotel booking or accommodation address
• Travel insurance (recommended)

Important for UK (post-Brexit):

• British citizens no longer have EU freedom of movement
• 90 days within 180-day period
• Work requires separate visa

ETIAS from 2026:

€7 registration, valid 3 years. Online application before travel.

Direct Flights:

• New York → Madrid: 7.5 hours
• London → Barcelona: 2 hours
• Toronto → Madrid: 8 hours

Speed limits in Spain:

For new drivers (< 2 years experience):

• On all roads: -10 km/h from standard limit
• Autopistas: 110 km/h instead of 120

Important:

• 30 km/h zones common in cities
• Speed cameras widely used
• Mobile radars on roadsides

🇷🇺 Visa Required

Russian citizens NEED a Schengen visa to enter Spain.

Post-2022 Changes:

• EU suspended simplified visa regime with Russia
• Consular fee increased to €80
• Processing time extended to 45 days
• Tourist visas issued with restrictions
• Russian aircraft banned from EU airspace

Alternative Routes:

• Via Turkey (Istanbul → Madrid)
• Via Serbia (Belgrade → Barcelona)
• Via UAE (Dubai → Spain)

Restrictions:

MIR bank cards don't work in Spain. Cash in euros recommended.

☀️ Summer Season (July-August)

The France-Spain border is one of Europe's busiest in summer. Queues up to 2 hours on peak days.

Worst Dates:

• 🔴 July 1-15 — French holiday start
• 🔴 August 15 — Assumption (holiday in France & Spain)
• 🔴 Last week of August — mass return

Best Crossing Times:

• 🟢 Early morning: 6:00-8:00 — minimal queues
• 🟢 Late evening: after 21:00
• 🟡 Mid-week (Tuesday-Thursday)
• 🔴 Avoid: Saturday 10:00-18:00

Alternative Crossings:

• Le Perthus / La Jonquera — main crossing (busiest)
• Portbou / Cerbère — less crowded
• Puigcerdà — mountain crossing, no queues
• Irún / Hendaye — Atlantic route

Useful Tips:

• Stock up on water and food
• Ensure air conditioning works!
• Refuel in France (cheaper than motorway stations)
• Check traffic on Google Maps

🇺🇦 Visa-free Entry

Ukrainian citizens with biometric passports can stay in Spain for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa.

Required Documents:

• Biometric passport (valid 3+ months after departure)
• Proof of funds: €100/day or €900 minimum
• Accommodation booking or invitation
• Return ticket or itinerary
• Travel insurance covering €30,000+

Temporary Protection:

Ukrainians with temporary protection status in the EU can travel within Schengen without the 90/180 day limit, using their EU member state residence permit.

From 2026:

ETIAS registration will be required (€7, valid for 3 years).

Spain has NO direct border with Ukraine!

La Jonquera (AP-7/A9) — Mediterranean (Catalonia)

• Queues summer: 30–120 min
• Queues off-season: 10–30 min
• AP-7 free in Catalonia!

Irún (AP-8/A63) — Atlantic (Basque Country)

• Queues: 15–45 min
• AP-8 toll (~€10-15)

Other crossings:

• Puigcerdà (N-20) — mountain, via Pyrenees
• Somport Tunnel — free

2. By air from Ukraine (fastest!):

• Kyiv → Madrid/Barcelona: 3.5–4 hours
• Airlines: Ryanair, Wizz Air, UIA, Iberia
• Seasonal flights to Malaga, Alicante

Distance by car: Ukraine → Spain ~2,500 km (via Poland, Germany, France)

EES (Entry/Exit System) — biometric registration system for third-country nationals.

Who registers:

• Citizens of visa-free countries (Ukraine, USA, UK, etc.)
• Schengen visa holders
• NOT registered: EU/EEA citizens

What is collected:

• 4 fingerprints
• Facial photo
• Passport scan
• Entry/exit dates

First registration: 10-15 minutes Subsequent crossings: 1-2 minutes
