Over the past month diesel has risen by **+0.423 €/l (+24%)** compared with the bulletin of 2026-06-29, so the direction is clearly upward. The good news for drivers is that the cheapest city stations are noticeably below that national average, and the difference is large enough to be worth planning for. The first is the country-wide average: **€2.185/l for diesel** and **€2.190/l for petrol 95**. This is a statistical average across the whole of [Germany](https://nakordoni.eu/en/country/germany), including expensive motorway stations, and it is the figure you will see quoted in official statistics. Petrol 95 also moved up over the same period, by **+0.291 €/l**. The second number is what a driver who plans ahead actually pays. The gap between the national average and the cheapest local stations varies from city to city, but it is consistently several cents per litre — and on a full tank that difference is worth the small effort. In **Berlin** the cheapest diesel starts at **€1.649/l**, while a typical near-city station asks about **€1.659/l**. **Frankfurt** starts at **€1.658/l** with a typical near-city price of **€1.682/l**, and **Cologne** starts at **€1.659/l** with a typical near-city price of **€1.677/l**. **Munich** is higher for diesel, from **€1.729/l** (typical near-city **€1.763/l**), but it has the lowest petrol 95 in our table at **€1.699/l**. **Hamburg** is the most expensive of the five for diesel, from **€1.829/l**, with a typical near-city price of **€1.847/l**. ## How to pay less for diesel in Germany German motorways charge no toll for passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes. That makes fuel the main variable cost of driving through the country, so optimising where you refuel has a direct effect on your total trip cost. Refuel in the early morning or late evening. Diesel is usually cheapest at those times of day, and German pump prices swing by several cents within a single day. Avoid motorway (Autobahn) stations. They charge roughly 15 to 20 cents per litre more than stations in nearby towns. A short detour off the motorway into a town pays off on almost any tank size. Choose supermarket-attached stations and independent, non-brand stations. In a German town these are almost always the cheapest option. For drivers coming from Ukraine, the order of refuelling matters. Top the tank up fully before leaving Ukraine.
