## Overview

The national average [German fuel price](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany) for diesel stands at **€2.250 per litre**, according to the latest EU Weekly Oil Bulletin dated 27 August 2026. Over the past month diesel has risen by **+0.065 €/l (+3%)**, while petrol 95 has moved in the opposite direction. The cheapest city stations sit noticeably below that national average, so where you refuel matters — and because German pump prices update continuously, the figures below are approximate snapshots rather than fixed values.

## Diesel price in Germany right now

The country-wide average for diesel is **€2.250 per litre** and for petrol 95 it is **€2.160 per litre**. Month over month, diesel is up by **+0.065 €/l** and petrol 95 is down by **-0.030 €/l**. That average is a statistical figure covering every station type in [Germany](https://nakordoni.eu/en/country/germany), including expensive motorway sites. A driver who plans refuelling stops carefully pays considerably less than the average: the cheapest pumps in the large cities start from well under €1.90 per litre for diesel. If you tracked [the diesel price in Germany back in July 2026](https://nakordoni.eu/en/news/2026-07-10/fuel-germany-diesel-2026-07), or compared it with [the average per litre reported for Germany in mid-August 2026](https://nakordoni.eu/en/news/2026-08-01/fuel-germany-diesel-2026-08), you will already know how quickly this figure moves. All prices are approximate and change continuously.

## Cheapest diesel by city

Here are the cheapest diesel prices our live search found near five major German cities, ranked from cheapest first.

| # | City | Diesel from €/l | Petrol 95 from €/l |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | [**Frankfurt**](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany/frankfurt) | **1.658** | 1.979 |
| 2 | [**Cologne**](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany/koln) | **1.659** | 1.979 |
| 3 | [**Berlin**](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany/berlin) | **1.669** | 2.099 |
| 4 | [**Munich**](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany/munich) | **1.729** | 2.039 |
| 5 | [**Hamburg**](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany/hamburg) | **1.829** | 2.079 |

Note: these are the cheapest live pump prices near each city, not the average; the live [German fuel prices page](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany) shows current numbers and a map per city.

Typical near-city prices are slightly above the very cheapest pumps. In **Frankfurt** the typical near-city diesel price is **€1.682**, in **Cologne** **€1.677**, in **Berlin** **€1.673**, in **Munich** **€1.758** and in **Hamburg** **€1.847**. Petrol 95 follows a different ranking: Frankfurt and Cologne both start at **€1.979**, while Berlin is the most expensive of the five at **€2.099**. Drivers looking specifically for [fuel prices in Berlin](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany) should therefore compare diesel and petrol separately, because the city that is cheap for one is not automatically cheap for the other.

## How to pay less for diesel in Germany

German motorways charge no road toll for passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes. Fuel is therefore the main variable cost of a German trip, which makes it worth optimising.

Refuel in the early morning or late evening. Diesel is usually cheapest at those hours. German pump prices swing by several cents across a single day, and stations may adjust their prices several times a day.

Avoid motorway (Autobahn) stations. They charge roughly 15 to 20 cents per litre more than stations in town. A short detour into a nearby town pays off on a full tank.

Prefer supermarket-attached stations and independent, non-brand stations. These are almost always the cheapest option in a German town.

Drivers coming from Ukraine should plan the tank in advance. Polish diesel is usually cheaper than German diesel, so fill up in Poland before crossing into Germany, and top the tank up fully before leaving Ukraine. You can compare the levels in each country on our [fuel prices across Europe](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel) page.

## Plan your trip through Germany

Check the live city page before you drive. Prices update continuously, so the number you see today may differ from the number at the pump tomorrow — the live page for [Munich](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany/munich) or [Hamburg](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany/hamburg) always shows the current figure.

Build your route first, then choose the refuelling stop. Our [route planner](https://nakordoni.eu/en/navigator) lets you lay out the drive and place fuel stops where prices are lowest rather than where the tank happens to run low.

Time the stop around the cheapest city on your route. If your journey passes [Frankfurt](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany/frankfurt) or [Cologne](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_germany/koln), a planned stop there is currently better value than a stop further north.
