## Overview

Planning fuel stops and road tolls can save real money on a drive from Ukraine across Europe. This week, **Poland** has the cheapest diesel in our ranking at about **€1.809 per litre**. The single biggest tip is to fill the tank in a cheaper country right before you cross into a more expensive one. Fuel prices update weekly, so the ranking can change.

## Where fuel is cheapest right now

The table below shows the 12 cheapest countries this week, ranked by diesel price. Data is from 14 October 2026 (week 42).

Some details are worth noting. Sweden has the lowest petrol 95 price in this list at **€1.59**, but its diesel is higher at **€2.12**. The Netherlands has the highest petrol price in the table at **€2.343**. If your car runs on LPG (autogas), Poland is also the cheapest here at **€0.778** per litre. For comparison, Ukraine is at about **€2.247** for diesel this week.

## Smart fuelling strategy

A few simple habits reduce the fuel bill on a long drive.

- **Fill up before an expensive border.** Poland has diesel at about **€1.809** per litre. Germany is at about **€2.397**. On a route from Poland to Germany, fill the tank in Poland first. The difference is about €0.59 per litre. On a 50-litre tank, the saving is significant.
- **Top off in Ukraine if needed.** If your route does not pass through the cheapest country, fill the tank to the maximum before you leave Ukraine. This reduces the fuel you must buy at higher prices later.
- **Avoid stations directly on the motorway.** They usually charge 15–20% more. Take a 5-minute detour into a nearby town instead.
- **Use supermarket stations in Western Europe.** Stations attached to supermarkets are almost always the cheapest in the area.

Check the cheapest countries on your route. For example, [fuel prices in Austria](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_car_drivers/fuel_austria) are about **€2.144** for diesel this week. That is higher than in Slovakia (**€1.99**) or Czechia (**€1.924**), which many drivers pass first. Plan the last full tank before the border accordingly.

## Tolls and vignettes across Europe

European countries use three main systems for passenger cars: a vignette, a ticket system, or no car tolls. Do not confuse them. A vignette is a pre-paid digital pass. You buy it online before you cross. A ticket system means you take a ticket at entry and pay at a booth when you leave. Some countries have no car tolls at all.

### Vignette countries — buy a digital pass before you cross

In vignette countries, you must buy the pass in advance from the official site. Cameras scan your license plate, and there is no booth to pay at. Most countries offer a 1-day transit pass. Three countries do not: **Moldova**, **Slovenia** and **Switzerland**. Their shortest option is longer, as shown in the table. Check your license plate details carefully when you buy.

### Pay-per-kilometre (toll booths)

In these countries, you pay at booths or with a ticket. Italy, France and Croatia are the most expensive systems in this group. Budget extra money for them.

- 🇷🇸 **Serbia**: take a ticket on entry and pay on exit, by cash or card.
- 🇮🇹 **Italy**: take a ticket on entry and pay on exit. It is one of the most expensive networks in Europe.
- 🇫🇷 **France**: most autoroutes use a ticket and barrier system. It is expensive, so budget accordingly.
- 🇭🇷 **Croatia**: take a ticket on entry and pay on exit. Tariffs are higher in the summer season.
- 🇵🇹 **Portugal**: a mix of classic toll booths and electronic-only motorways. Get a Via Verde transponder for the electronic-only roads.
- 🇵🇱 **Poland**: state motorways are free for cars. Private A1, A2 and A4 concessions charge at booths or through the Autopay app.

### Toll-free for cars

Motorways are free for passenger cars in 🇩🇪 **Germany**, 🇧🇪 **Belgium** and 🇳🇱 **the Netherlands**. Rare tunnel or bridge exceptions may still apply. Germany has no car tolls, but its diesel is about **€2.397** per litre this week, so fill up before you cross if you can.
