# Northern Greece for Road Trips: Beaches, Calm and Roads

Northern regions of Greece (Eastern Macedonia and Thrace) remain a popular destination for motorists from Sofia and neighboring countries thanks to the relatively short distance (about 300 km) and dispersed traffic flows outside peak hours. Traveling by your own vehicle allows you to comfortably reach relatively Pacific wild beaches and avoid continuous coastal development.

##### Route and leisure features

For drivers and travelers the following factors are important when planning a trip to the Struma Bay and the sections between Ofrinio and Kariana:

- **Road and parking conditions:** the infrastructure of coastal towns is designed for private cars, but villages may experience local power outages and unstable internet.
- **Coastline specifics:** some sections of the Struma Bay have a rocky bottom, requiring special footwear for swimming.
- **Fuel prices and restrictions:** fuel in Greece is more expensive than in neighboring countries by €0.30–0.50 per litre. All basic prices for bottled water (€0.60) are regulated by the state.
- **Quiet rules:** after 22:00 a strict quiet regime is in effect; violations may result in administrative fines.
