# Heavy Traffic at the Turkish Border and Suspended Ferries to Romania: Operational Situation at Bulgarian Checkpoints

As of August 24, 2026, the Main Directorate "Border Police" of the Ministry of Interior of Bulgaria reports a significant increase in the flow of passenger cars entering Turkey via the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint. On other border directions, the situation remains stable, but international carriers and tourists must take into account infrastructural restrictions on Danube crossings and strict weight limits on mountain passes.

##### Bulgarian-Turkish Border: Peak Loads

The Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint is currently operating under high seasonal traffic conditions, typical for late August. The main accumulation of transport forms during daytime hours. To avoid long waiting times, border services recommend planning border crossings for nighttime or early morning.

##### Border with Romania: Suspension of Ferry Services

All land border checkpoints between Bulgaria and Romania operate normally without forming queues. However, logistics across the Danube River are complicated by natural factors: due to a critically low water level, the operation of two popular crossings has been completely suspended since July.

- **Suspended ferry routes:** Oryahovo – Bechet, Svishtov – Zimnicea.
- **Alternative routes:** To cross the border in these areas, it is necessary to use the Ruse – Giurgiu and Vidin – Calafat bridges.

##### Traffic Regulations to Greece, Serbia, and North Macedonia

Traffic on the western and southern borders of Bulgaria remains within normal limits. The main requirement for drivers is strict compliance with weight restrictions when choosing a checkpoint. Vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons are not allowed to pass through small mountain passes and will be turned back by the border police.
