# Peter and Paul 2026: What Truck Drivers Need to Know About Switzerland

22.06.2026 08:58 Service Nakordoni.eu

This article covers a past period. [Current calendar of truck driving bans in Europe →](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_truck_drivers/traffic_bans)

## General situation

The [Feast of Saints Peter and Paul](https://nakordoni.eu/en/holidays) falls on **Monday, 29 June 2026**. Unlike pan-European public holidays, this day is a **cantonal holiday** rather than a nationwide one in Switzerland. Accordingly, the nationwide [holiday truck traffic ban](https://nakordoni.eu/en/for_truck_drivers/traffic_bans) across all of Switzerland **does not apply** on this day. Switzerland's only federal non-working day is 1 August (Nationalfeiertag).

## Regional restrictions — Canton of Ticino

29 June is an official cantonal holiday in the canton of **Ticino**, as well as in some municipalities of the cantons of Graubünden and Luzern. This creates three important rules for carriers whose routes pass through Ticino:

- **Transit is permitted:** Under Swiss law, cantonal holidays do not block transit traffic. Trucks may freely pass in transit through the territory of Ticino — for example, along the A2 motorway through the Gotthard tunnel — towards Italy or from there.
- **Freight operations are prohibited:** Loading, unloading, as well as starting or finishing a route directly within the territory of the canton of Ticino on this day are not allowed.
- **Customs offices closed (critically important):** The commercial offices of Swiss customs at the border with Italy in Ticino — in particular the **Chiasso** and **Stabio** terminals — will be **closed**. Clearing imports or exports directly for Switzerland at these points will be impossible. Border crossing is allowed only for transit transport with pre-arranged transit documents (for example, T1/T2).

## Restrictions on 29.06.2026

| Country | Local name | Time | Applies to | Roads | Fine |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Switzerland | Nachtfahrverbot | **00:00–05:00** and **22:00–24:00** | Freight vehicles >3.5 t | All public roads | CHF 100–10 000 |

*There is no daytime holiday ban (00:00–24:00) on 29 June across Switzerland — only the standard nighttime restrictions apply.*

## Holiday eve (Sunday, 28 June 2026)

The eve of the holiday falls on **Sunday, 28 June 2026**. In Switzerland, the standard Sunday truck traffic ban (over 3.5 t) applies from **00:00 to 24:00**. Carriers planning transit through Switzerland should keep in mind: Saturday, 27 June until 22:00 is the last free window before the weekend block.

## Nighttime ban (daily)

Across the whole of Switzerland, regardless of holidays, the standard **nighttime ban (Nachtfahrverbot)** applies to freight vehicles over 3.5 t: daily from **22:00 to 05:00**. This applies to ordinary weekdays, weekends, and holidays alike.

## Rules and fines — Switzerland

Switzerland applies one of the strictest regimes for heavy goods vehicles in Europe. **Weight threshold: >3.5 t** gross weight — significantly lower than the >7.5 t threshold used in most other European countries. A wide range of commercial vehicles falls under the restriction, including light commercial and medium-tonnage trucks that are not restricted elsewhere. **Roads:** all public roads without exception — cantonal, municipal, and motorways. **Fines:** from CHF 100 to CHF 10 000 depending on the severity of the violation and prior records. The police and FEDRO conduct frequent roadside checks.

## Plan your route

- **Transit on 29 June is possible:** if your route passes in transit through Ticino (A2/Gotthard) without stops for loading or unloading in the canton — movement is permitted during daytime hours (05:00–22:00).
- **Avoid Chiasso and Stabio for customs clearance:** if import/export clearance for Switzerland is required, plan it for another day or via a customs point outside Ticino.
- **Sunday 28 June is blocked:** the standard Swiss Sunday ban 00:00–24:00. Plan transit for Saturday 27 June until 22:00.
- **Austrian corridor as an alternative:** [Austria](https://nakordoni.eu/en/country/austria) does not observe 29 June as a national holiday. The A13 Brenner motorway remains open for freight transport. Check Austrian sector bans and restrictions before choosing a route.
- **Book parking in advance:** certified truck parking areas in southern Germany and northern Italy fill up quickly before the weekend. Book no later than Thursday, 25 June.
